“Gerrymandering isn’t just a technical issue—it’s a trust issue,” Forcum said. “When voters feel like the system is rigged, they check out. And that’s exactly what the parties are counting on.”

A new poll from the Independent Center highlights a clear message from the public: Americans are fed up with the current political leadership, and they’re ready for change.

From our partner the Campaign Legal Center. Congratulations Utah.

"Utahns have been fighting since at least 2018 for fair voting maps and fair representation. Every time Utah voters score a victory in this fight, state lawmakers erect new hurdles in an attempt to maintain their ability to gerrymander the state’s congressional map at the expense of Utahns."

After nearly a decade-long battle for a fair congressional district map, Utahns have successfully secured the opportunity for fair representation ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

A recent poll shows that 82% of Americans prefer nonpartisan commissions for redistricting over political party control. This preference spans across party lines, highlighting a significant disconnect between political maneuvering and public sentiment. It is crucial that NM legislators consider the overwhelming support for fair and impartial redistricting.

"George Washington warned in his farewell address that rank partisanship undermines the democratic principle of rule by the people and 'put[s] in the place of the delegated will of the nation the will of a party.'"

The former president’s support of California’s redistricting plan promotes the partisan divide.

"Sen. Natalie Figueroa (D-Albuquerque) told the task force that she has volunteered to carry a yet-to-be-written joint resolution in the 2026 legislative session to create an independent redistricting commission. She said the task force was planned long before Texas decided to gerrymander its congressional maps."

With the resignation of one party’s members, the task force has 'lost its foundation of nonpartisanship,' Fair Districts for New Mexico said.

"Nationwide, over 8 in 10 Americans (82%) prefer that congressional districts be drawn by nonpartisan commissions rather than the party in power in each state. While a handful of states have independent commissions handling their congressional line-drawing, state legislatures have that power in more than half of states."

National majorities of Democrats and Republicans, as well as majorities in both Texas and California, prefer nonpartisan commissions over political parties in power to run redistricting.

The New Mexico Redistricting Task Force is redefining its approach to uphold the principles of nonpartisanship in redistricting. As challenges arise, the task force, sponsored by the League of Women Voters and Fair Districts for New Mexico, remains committed to educating the public through upcoming webinars. "Gibson’s ruling sides with the plaintiffs — which include the groups League of Women Voters of Utah, Mormon Women for Ethical Government and the Campaign Legal Center — in an anti-gerrymanding lawsuit that’s stretched on for more than two years over an issue that dates back even further. "

“We are thrilled that the court has reaffirmed what we have known all along — that the people have co-equal lawmaking authority with the Legislature. That the Legislature violated the Utah Constitution when they overturned Proposition 4. And that Utahns deserve fair, independent maps they voted for almost seven years ago,” she (Elizabeth Rasmussen) said.

A Utah judge has ruled the Utah Legislature overstepped when it overrode the 2018 Better Boundaries initiative for an independent commission.
