The Department of Senior Affairs Volunteerism team and AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers were proud to support local first responders during Albuquerque’s 9/11 Stair Climb and Memorial.

As part of the day’s tribute, Albuquerque area firefighters completed a 110-story stair climb honoring the firefighters who answered the call on September 11, 2001, before joining fellow first responders and community members for the memorial ceremony at Civic Plaza. Our team and volunteers provided water, fruit and snacks for the firefighters, police officers, cadets and other first responders participating throughout the day.

We’re grateful to our volunteers who gave their time to support the event, and to all of the first responders who serve our community each day.

For more than 40 years, the Department of Senior Affairs has sponsored AmeriCorps Seniors in Albuquerque, connecting adults 55 and older with opportunities to serve and make a difference in our community.

Today, the City of Albuquerque joined our community at Civic Plaza to mark the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001.

Together with Bernalillo County, Albuquerque firefighters, police officers, cadets, fellow City departments and community members, we honored the lives lost and paid tribute to the first responders who answered the call to serve that day, and to those who continue that commitment to service in our own community.

The New Mexico Fire & Police Pipes and Drums led a procession of local first responders as part of the ceremony. We’re grateful for their service to our community every day and proud to join them in today’s tribute.

We recently celebrated the incredible volunteers who give their time and talents to our senior community at the 2026 RSVP Appreciation Breakfast!

More than 300 guests gathered at Embassy Suites Albuquerque for this annual celebration of service. Supported by AmeriCorps Seniors, RSVP brings together volunteers and community partners to make a difference in our senior community, and the breakfast gave us an opportunity to recognize and celebrate that service.

A highlight of the morning was recognizing our 2026 RSVP award recipients:
🏆 Exceptional Station of the Year — Palo Duro Senior Center
🏆 Substantial Station of the Year — New Mexico Veterans Memorial
🏆 Rookie of the Year — Ruth Castrodad
🏆 Volunteer of the Year — Bob Martinez
🏆 RSVP Lifetime Achievement Award — Terri Alyce Bixter

The program also featured remarks from Department of Senior Affairs leadership, including Associate Director and Mayor’s Liaison Alan Armijo and Deputy Director Nikki Peone, as we reflected on the important role volunteers play across our senior community.

We’re grateful to our volunteers, community partners and everyone who helped make this year’s celebration possible. Most of all, we thank our RSVP volunteers for the time, compassion and commitment they share with our community throughout the year.

RSVP is supported by AmeriCorps Seniors and the City of Albuquerque Department of Senior Affairs. Congratulations to this year’s honorees, and thank you to all who serve!
