NM Commission on the Status of Women

NM Commission on the Status of Women We are a state entity focused on creating a positive change in the lives of New Mexican women.

The New Mexico Commission on the Status of Women had a wonderful time hosting its first annual 2026 Period Pride this past Saturday at Grounded Coffee Shop during the Las Cruces Farmers Market! ☕️💫

The day was filled with menstrual equity resources, community connection, and a period product donation drive benefiting La Casa Domestic Violence Shelter and Mesilla Valley Community of Hope. A total of 8,349 single menstrual products were collected and distributed to support community members in need! ⭐

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who stopped by, donated products, shared resources, and helped make this event possible! We are especially grateful to our incredible community partners who tabled with us throughout the day: the New Mexico Department of Health, Faith Roots Reproductive, Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains, the New Mexico Coalition Against Domestic Violence, La Piñon Sexual Assault Services, and the Sexual Assault Helpline of New Mexico. We also want to thank NM Free Flow for donating 200 monthly kits for this event! 💜

Access to period products is a basic necessity, NOT a luxury, and we are proud to continue advocating for menstrual equity across New Mexico! 🩸❤️

Happy Pride from the New Mexico Commission on the Status of Women! The Commission on the Status of Women is committed to advocating for a safe and bright future for all LGBTQ+ individuals in our state. Join us in June as we support New Mexico Pride.

Pride has a deep rooted history in New Mexico, which is a trailblazing state in equal rights and inclusivity. In 1975, New Mexico became one of the first states to repeal its anti-sodomy law. In 2003 New Mexico further solidified its place as a safe haven when a hate crime law was passed with specific language about sexual orientation and gender identity. In 2023, groundbreaking legislation to protect gender-affirming care was passed. All of these policies reflect New Mexico’s unwavering commitment to protecting diversity and inclusivity across all aspects of life.

For many low-income women, period poverty is a challenge they face every month.
Did you know that assistance programs in New Mexico, including EBT, SNAP, and WIC, currently do not cover menstrual products? No one should have to miss work, school, or important life events because they can’t afford basic period supplies. Together, we can help build a New Mexico where every woman has access to the products she needs.

Join us this Saturday, May 30, at Grounded Coffee Company for our first Period Pride event! We’ll be sharing resources about menstrual equity, and you can receive a free coffee when you donate period supplies.

Today is the 5th annual Day Without Child Care!

Started by Community Change Action, this is a strike to demand a universal child care system. For years, child care costs have been adding up, providers have been paid unfair wages, and younger generations have suffered the consequences. Visit CommunityChangeAction.org to sign their pledge and join the strike!

New Mexico is a leader in universal child care, becoming the first state in the nation to offer universal, no-cost child care. It officially launched on November 1, 2025. Despite a current legal challenge, the program remains in effect. Families can use the New Mexico Early Childhood Education & Care Department’s Child Care Finder to locate a free provider in their neighborhood.

Happy Mother’s Day from the New Mexico Commission on the Status of Women.
When we support mothers, we support their children. When we provide the resources that mothers need to thrive, we are securing a strong and healthy future for all of New Mexico.

But that future depends on real support. Proposed cuts to WIC threaten access to essential nutrition for thousands of New Mexico mothers and babies—at one of the most critical stages of life. Supporting moms means protecting programs that help them put food on the table. Share this post or comment below to show your support for mothers using WIC to feed their families.

The NMCSW had an incredible time at the NM Coalition of Sexual Assault Programs (NMCSAP) Luminarias: Statewide Sexual Assault Conference this past week ✨ 💜

We had the opportunity to reflect on the past year of sexual assault services across New Mexico, honor outstanding advocates, and learn and connect with the advocates, SANE nurses, forensic interviewers, and so many others who show up every single day to support survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence. Thank you for the work you do! 🏆

In Fiscal Year 2025:
📊 5,942 survivors were served
📞 1,762 contacts were made to the Sexual Assault Helpline
These numbers represent real people, real stories, and survivor-centered care across our state!🩵

A special thank you to Commissioner Alexandria Taylor for her leadership and dedication to advancing this work across New Mexico! It was also a pleasure to share the space with Elena Giacci and Senator Linda Lopez, we are grateful for your partnership and shared commitment to supporting survivors!💫

We are very excited to introduce a new CSW event: Period Pride!

Join us at Grounded Coffee Shop in Las Cruces to learn more about menstrual equity and resources. Get a free cup of coffee when you donate a box of menstrual products.

No one should have to miss school, work, or daily activities due to lack of access to basic hygiene products. Period products are necessities—not luxuries—and improving access helps reduce stigma, support health, and promote dignity for all.

Today, May 5, is the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Relatives.

Also known as Red Dress Day, it highlights the ongoing crisis that Native Women are facing nationwide. Native women face murder rates more than ten times the national average on some reservations

Here in New Mexico, this crisis is deeply felt. The recent passage of Senate Memorial 14, which acknowledges and creates a memorial for the forced sterilization of Native women, and women of color in NM, is a step toward truth, recognition, and healing—but it also reminds us how much work remains.

We stand with Indigenous women, families, and communities across our state.

Today, we’re wearing jeans to stand in solidarity with sexual assault survivors.

Denim Day takes place on the last Wednesday of April as part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
It began after a controversial ruling by the Italian Supreme Court, which overturned a r**e conviction based on the claim that the victim’s tight jeans implied consent. In response, women in the Italian Parliament wore jeans to work in solidarity with the survivor, sparking a global movement to challenge victim-blaming and stand with survivors.

As the longest-running campaign against sexual violence, we join Peace Over Violence in asking everyone to make a fashion statement in protest of the misconceptions that continue to surround sexual assault survivors.
