On Saturday, October 14th, starting at 9:13 AM and ending at 12:09 PM, Albuquerque will be a premier place on the continent to experience a rare annular solar eclipse. This “ring of fire” solar eclipse is cause for celebration and watch parties for many interested observers worldwide and within our region, with a very important exception.

Many Indigenous people will not be witnessing the eclipse due to cultural beliefs. The City of Albuquerque recognizes this rare celestial phenomenon in which the New Moon moves in front of the Sun but does not cover the Sun’s disk completely, which carries meaning for Indigenous people. For some tribes, it is considered a sacred time to be observed in different ways such as prayer, fasting, or staying indoors and adverting eyes from the outdoors.

We share this cultural context to encourage understanding and respect for Indigenous traditions and beliefs at this time.
