Every day, New Mexico families make important decisions about child care, housing, groceries, health care, education, and making ends meet.

The people making decisions about those same issues should understand those experiences firsthand.

Amendment 4 would help make it possible for more everyday New Mexicans to serve in the Legislature, bringing real-life experience and diverse perspectives to the table.

A Legislature that reflects our communities is better equipped to understand the challenges and opportunities facing New Mexico families.

So, what would Amendment 4 actually do?

It would allow New Mexico legislators to receive compensation tied to the state’s median household income, keeping their compensation connected to the people they represent.

Why does that matter? Because serving in our Legislature should be an opportunity for everyday New Mexicans, not just those who can afford to serve without pay.

Amendment 4 can help make public service more accessible and bring more working people and lived experiences to the Roundhouse.

When our Legislature reflects the people it serves, everyone benefits.

New Mexicans deserve leaders who understand the realities our families and communities face every day.

Amendment 4 can help open the door for more teachers, nurses, parents, small-business owners, farmers, ranchers, and working people to serve and bring their lived experiences to the Roundhouse.

When more of our communities have a voice at the table, we can build a stronger and more representative New Mexico for everyone.

This is about more than today. It’s about building a stronger democracy for the young people who will lead New Mexico tomorrow.

Future generations deserve a government where everyday people have the opportunity to serve, lead, and make decisions for their communities.
