I’ve had a few conversations with residents about my vote on the Austin School Lofts project and wanted to offer some clarification.
I support the redevelopment of the former Austin School into housing. The vote before Council, however, was about the terms of the PILOT (Payment in Lieu of Taxes) agreement, not the project itself.
My concern was the long-term financial impact of the agreement, especially as Albion works to strengthen its tax base to support infrastructure, public safety, and city services.
I shared a more detailed explanation of my position in a Letter-To-The-Editor published in this week’s print edition of The Recorder. I’d encourage anyone interested to take a look.

Thank you to everyone who has reached out — I appreciate the conversation.

PLEASE READ! This is the most current copy of the PILOT ordinance that the Albion City Council is going to vote on. A study session will be held on Monday, August 11, 2025 at 6:00PM in Tennant Hall adjacent to the Methodist Church in Albion. The address is 600 E. Michigan Avenue, Albion. Members of the Public are encouraged to attend.

Note: The City of Albion does NOT own the Washington Gardner school building. The basic question about this issue is: Is a 45-year long tax exemption for a housing development in the best economic interest for the citizens of Albion?

BOIL WATER ALERT:
WHERE: Burr Oak Street between E. Michigan Ave and Barnes Street
INSTRUCTIONS: Residents living in this location are advised to boil water for at least the next 48 hours, until this Friday, August 1st, 2025 at 6:30PM.

Approximately 6:30PM Wednesday, July 30, we were notified that our contractor (Meade Brothers Excavating) made a serious mistake in charging one of our new watermains with water. As indicated by the photograph, the blue hose connected to the fire hydrant is not a standard practice allowed in supplying water to another watermain except only under strict supervision of the municipality. Because of disinfection practices stated by the State of Michigan and industry practices, this rule must be followed and monitored to maintain safe drinking water. The reason behind the failure was a water valve which was closed on an existing four Inch (4”) watermain failed to open. The four Inch (4”) watermain will be abandoned upon completion of our construction project. Our DPW Team is on-site coordinating with both the engineer and contractor. In a boil- water scenario, it is critical that we isolate the main and disinfect the area for at least forty-eight(48) hours with periodic testing for bacteria. We are in the process of notifying the affected property owners. The effected area is Burr Oak Street between Michigan Avenue and Barns Street. I will keep you informed of any new developments.

Albion City Council Meeting tonight: 7:00PM July 28, 2025 at the Marshall Opportunity High School library. 225 E. Watson Street, Albion.

Dear Neighbors,

One of the agenda items for tonight’s council to discuss is one that many of you have already heard about: A proposed 45-year tax exemption to an out-of-town developer who wants to convert the former Washington Gardner School into low-income housing. If passed, this project will cost current Albion residents more money in public services, infrastructure maintenance, and revenue loss.

City government has an obligation to make the best use of public funds to strengthen its economy and provide the highest level of public service possible. This proposal does exactly the opposite.

After numerous discussions with many of you, including our city’s finance and tax officials, it is clear that I must vote “NO” to this proposed plan.

Going forward, we must be focused on building relationships with industries, businesses, and investors who will bring economic growth and job opportunities to every level of this community.

As for the Washington Gardner High School building - and any of our other landmark buildings we want saved in this community - we need to be active and assertive in marketing them for their best possible potential. We can’t grow our economy if we give these buildings to the first low-bidder who comes along.
