As temperatures continue to rise in Texas, it's important to remember how to tell if someone is experiencing heat exhaustion or having a heat stroke. If someone is showing signs of either, get them to a cool place, give them water, and call 9-1-1 if symptoms continue.

Stay cool, stay hydrated, and stay safe!

📣 Derecho season is nearly here across Indiana, and while these widespread windstorms are uncommon, they can pack a serious punch when conditions come together just right. A derecho (pronounced deh-REY-cho) is a long-lived, fast-moving line of thunderstorms capable of producing destructive straight-line winds over hundreds of miles. Indiana typically sees one to two derecho-producing events each year, with late spring through mid-summer (June - August) being the most favorable time as heat, humidity, and strong upper-level winds begin to align.

One of the most memorable examples was the June 29, 2012 derecho, one of the most destructive wind events in Indiana history. This storm carved a path of destruction more than 600 miles long from the Midwest to the East Coast, producing wind gusts as high as 91 mph at Fort Wayne International Airport and leaving widespread damage and power outages behind. As we head deeper into severe weather season, it’s a great reminder that not all dangerous storms produce tornadoes and that straight-line winds from derechos can be just as impactful. Make sure you have multiple ways to receive warnings and always take severe thunderstorm warnings seriously.
