SCAM ALERT: DID A PACKAGE SHOW UP THAT YOU NEVER ORDERED?

It could be a “brushing scam.”
In these scams, sellers or scammers send inexpensive merchandise to people who never ordered it, then use the recipient’s name or information to create fake positive reviews. An unexpected package can also be a sign that some of your personal information has been exposed.
The New York State Sheriffs’ Association reminds you:

• Don’t scan QR codes or follow instructions included with an unexpected package.
• Don’t call phone numbers or visit websites listed in the package unless you verify them independently.
• Check your shopping and financial accounts for purchases you don’t recognize.
• Change passwords if you think an account may have been compromised.
• If the package is addressed to someone else, don’t assume it belongs to you.

An unexpected package may seem harmless, but it’s worth taking a few minutes to make sure your accounts and personal information are secure.
If you receive a suspicious package, report it to the retailer or delivery company and share this post with family and friends so they know what to watch for.

Severe Weather Generates Heavy 911 Call Volume Across Orleans County

During this morning’s severe weather event, the Orleans County 911 Center experienced a significant surge in emergency and non-emergency activity. Between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m., dispatchers handled a total of 159 telephone calls — an average of 53 calls per hour, or approximately one call every 68 seconds.

During that same three-hour period, the Communications Center documented 57 dispatched incidents involving law enforcement, fire departments and emergency medical services. Many of these incidents were weather-related, including numerous reports of trees and utility wires down throughout the county.

Of the 57 dispatched incidents, 42 involved either downed trees or electrical/power hazards. These two categories accounted for nearly 74% of all incidents dispatched during the period. The incident log also reflects EMS calls, fire-related calls, law-enforcement service calls and other public-safety matters occurring while the storm response was underway.

In addition to the incidents documented through the Orleans County 911 Center, local fire departments and highway departments responded to and handled numerous additional storm-related conditions throughout the county

The Orleans County Sheriff’s Office will continue increased patrols dedicated to preventing drunk and drug-impaired driving throughout the Labor Day weekend and beyond.

With four months remaining in 2026, the Orleans County Sheriff’s Office has already seen an increase in DWI arrests for the fifth consecutive year. Sheriff Bourke and Sheriff’s Office personnel remain committed to keeping our roadways safe and preventing impaired-driving related tragedies.

On Tuesday, August 25th, Orleans County Legislator Skip Draper presented a Stork Award to Orleans County Sheriff’s Office Public Safety Dispatchers Jodi Marion and Mike Schultz in recognition of their outstanding efforts to help deliver a baby on August 15, 2026.

At approximately 11:45 a.m. on August 15th, the baby’s father called 911. Just four minutes later, the baby was born at Crosby's in Clarendon.

Public Safety Dispatcher Marion remained on the phone with the father, providing guidance and support while Public Safety Dispatcher Schultz coordinated the emergency response and dispatched an ambulance. The mother and newborn were transported to Strong Memorial Hospital, where they received further care.

The Orleans County Sheriff’s Office is proud of the professionalism, teamwork, and dedication demonstrated by Public Safety Dispatchers Marion and Schultz during this emergency.

Sheriff Christopher M. Bourke is proud of the outstanding work our Public Safety Dispatchers do every day to serve and protect the residents of Orleans County. Their calm response and commitment to helping others truly make a difference.

Orleans County Sheriff’s Office-- Boat Fire on Oak Orchard River

CARLTON, NY — August 18, 2026 — The Orleans County Sheriff’s Office responded to a boat fire on the Oak Orchard River early Tuesday morning.

Just before 6:00 a.m., emergency responders were dispatched to the area of 994 Point Breeze Road for a report of a boat on fire near a dock.

The Orleans County Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol Unit and Road Patrol responded to the scene along with the Carlton Fire Department and Kendall Fire Department.

Sheriff’s Office Marine Deputies located the burning vessel near the dock area and towed it to the Orleans County boat launch, where the remaining flames were extinguished. Marine Deputies then assisted with removing the damaged vessel from the water.

As a result of the fire, one Orleans County-owned dock and a second boat sustained damage. No other property damage was reported. The owner of the vessel sustained apparent minor injuries but declined evaluation or treatment by emergency medical personnel. The cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation.

The Orleans County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the Carlton and Kendall fire departments and all responding personnel for their assistance at the scene.
