Today, we celebrate a remarkable advocate, mentor, teacher, and friend.

After decades of service, Kathleen Connelly is retiring from the Alabama Coalition Against R**e. While many know her as a Program Manager, those of us fortunate enough to work alongside her know she has been so much more.

For years, Kathleen has walked beside victim service providers across Alabama, helping agencies like ours strengthen our programs, improve our services, and uphold the highest standards of care.

She has reviewed our finances, analyzed our data, examined our policies and procedures, and challenged us to always strive for excellence … not for compliance’s sake, but because survivors deserve nothing less.

Kathleen has trained and educated countless advocates throughout her career, shaping generations of professionals who now serve victims and survivors across our state. Through her leadership in Ethics Training, she continually reminded us that integrity is not just something we talk about … it is something we practice in every decision we make.

Her wisdom, guidance, and unwavering commitment to survivors have left an indelible mark on Family Services of North Alabama and on the entire victim services movement in Alabama.

While her absence will be felt tremendously, her legacy will continue through every advocate she mentored, every agency she strengthened, and every survivor who benefited from the systems she helped improve.

Kathleen … thank you for your decades of service, your commitment to excellence, and your steadfast belief that this work matters. What you have taught us will be paid forward and carried on for years to come.

Please join us in congratulating Kathleen on her well-earned retirement and thanking her for the countless lives she has impacted along the way.

This Nurse’s Week, we want to honor two extraordinary women whose compassion, sacrifice, and strength have changed the lives of countless survivors across Alabama … Tasha Galanty and Vikki Vodosia.

Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANEs) do far more than most people realize.

Becoming a SANE requires extensive specialized training, forensic education, clinical precepting, ongoing certifications, and the emotional resilience to walk with victims through some of the darkest moments of their lives. But beyond the credentials and training, this work requires something even greater … heart.

SANEs are often the first safe place a survivor encounters after an assault. They provide medical care, collect forensic evidence, explain overwhelming processes, advocate for victims, and offer comfort and dignity in moments filled with fear, pain, and trauma.

And that kind of work changes you.

From 2019 until 2025, Tasha served as the only SANE for Family Services of North Alabama. Every r**e kit performed through FSNA during those years was done by her. For six years, she remained on call 24/7 … first serving two counties and eventually four.

There were nights when Tasha worked 12+ hour shifts overseeing the ICU at a local hospital and then came straight to our office to care for a victim of sexual assault. No spotlight. No recognition. Just an unwavering commitment to survivors.

Alongside professionals like Tasha stands Vikki Vodosia, a SANE at the CHIPS Center in Birmingham and a valued member of the FSNA Board of Directors. Vikki’s dedication to survivors and advocacy for trauma-informed care reflects the same compassion and servant leadership that define this work.

These women represent the very best of nursing … not only because of their clinical expertise, but because of their ability to sit with people in unimaginable pain and help them begin to find safety, dignity, and healing again.

The work is exhausting. The calls come at all hours. The stories are heartbreaking. Yet they continue to show up with compassion, professionalism, and grace.

To Tasha and Vikki … thank you for serving survivors with such strength and humanity. Your work matters more than words can express, and we are profoundly grateful for both of you.

Cherokee, DeKalb, Etowah, and Marshall Counties … we are fortunate to have these two on our team.

Happy Nurse’s Week to two truly remarkable women. We appreciate you!

AVAP (Alabama Victim Assistance Portal) connects crime victims, survivors, and their families to trusted services and support across Alabama. The portal was developed by VOCAL – Victims of Crime and Leniency, an organization which has been supporting crime victims since 1982.
