Today marks the first day of 2026 that a New York State Mesonet station has reached 90F or greater, with numerous stations reaching this threshold. Furthermore, tomorrow looks just as warm. Approximately one in three NYers are under a "Major" risk-level in the NWS HeatRisk product. Early season heat is often more impactful because our bodies have not yet acclimated to summertime weather.

These two maps may look very similar, but they're highlighting two different hazards for today and tonight.

The map on the left shows the National Weather Service risk of severe thunderstorms, which is highest in western and central NY (level 2 of 5). The right map shows the risk of flash flooding, which unfortunately is also highest in western NY (level 2 of 4). This is the highest flash flooding threat of 2026 thus far.

Happy first day of spring, New Yorkers! 🌷 Though it seemed like a brutally cold winter, it was actually only slightly below-average compared to a 30-year average. While the Climate Prediction Center is predicting a colder than average end of March, a shift to above normal temperatures is possible in April. ☀️

As we approach the onset of heavier snow in southern NY, let's take stock of the forecast.

The most severe impacts are expected across downstate NY, where the Winter Storm Severity Index is at a very rare "extreme" level. This is due to a forecast of 18"+ of snow and 50+ mph wind gusts across portions of Long Island. These conditions are likely to result in power outages.

Elsewhere across upstate NY, heavy snow and strong winds are also possible across southeast upstate NY.
