As we work to get things organized at the Museum, we are grateful for the many items that have been donated to the Museum over the years.

Many of the items we have on display came from personal collections or from families of Firefighters and Dispatchers who have passed on.

Most recent were items belonging to the late Tommy Gannon AFD Dispatcher 12 that included his helmet

Good Afternoon,

At our last Board Meeting, we agreed to hire a Part-Time Employee to open our doors on a consistent basis. Our new hours will be Wednesday Evenings and Sunday Afternoons. The exact times will be posted soon.

We will be closed on Easter Sunday and begin new hours next week.

Our new employee is Aaron Bradt. Aaron is a museum and archives professional with four and one half years of experience.

Aaron worked at the Albany County Historical Association as the collections associate, primarily performing collection care, digitization, and conducting tours of the 1798 Ten Broeck Mansion. At the ACHA, Aaron digitized and published over 2,000 images of historic documents and transcriptions online.

Aaron currently works for the Albany County Hall of Records as an archival aide cataloging historic documents from Albany County and assists in the search room.

Aaron holds a BA in history from SUNY Potsdam (2017), an MA in Public History from UAlbany (2021), and an MS in Information Science specializing in archives and records management from UAlbany (2021).

Please join us in welcoming Aaron to the Museum.

Today in 1911, one of the most memorable fires occurred in Albany’s history, when the NYS Capitol building burned in a fire that occurred in the early morning hours, in the area of the state library.

A general alarm was struck, brining in all Albany Fire Department companies to battle the massive blaze. An insurmountable loss occurred to the historic documents stored in the library, and may documents were destroyed. Some how only one death occurred, claiming the night watchman.

Something to think about, all apparatus on scene was still pulled by horse from the firehouses.

Many thanks to John Bulmer for the photo restoration
