April 30th is ACEs Awareness Day in New York State.
Although ACEs Awareness Day highlights the consequences and prevalence of childhood adversity, our focus remains on emphasizing the importance of preventing ACEs from ever occurring. ACEs can continue to impact us throughout adulthood – such as by influencing behavior, relationships, and health outcomes. These effects are mitigated by Protective Factors which incorporate nurturing relationships and environments which foster a sense of value and belonging. Protective factors at any age highlight the power of connection, of moving from isolation to community, of building resilience through each proactive step.

As we bid farewell to April this year, Let's reflect on our collective achievements, and renew our commitment to this vital cause. The journey doesn't end here— it gains momentum. Join us as we continue to strive for a safer tomorrow for every child. When we come together to support families and strengthen communities, we don’t just unlock possibilities, we create a future where every child’s safety, well-being, and potential are protected and limitless. Together, we can build a world where every child is safe and supported. A strong prevention ecosystem brings together families, communities, policymakers, and organizations at every level to create lasting change.

As we move into May, let’s be sure we don’t leave keeping our children safe and healthy until next April. Resources in NYS you can use all year, not just in April:

Positive experiences early in life are key to a child’s development. Prevent Child Abuse NY’s trainings “create ongoing opportunities for growth and resilience”. Let’s help every child have the opportunity to build positive childhood experiences that last a lifetime.

PCA-NY has been working to increase awareness and understanding of the lifelong implications of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and how these effects can be mitigated by intentionally building Positive Childhood Experiences (PCEs) in children and families. PCA-NY works to improve the delivery of programs that support children and families, thereby increasing cooperative family engagement. We cannot keep telling families, “You need to do better.” We cannot keep telling providers, “You need to do better.” We must intentionally focus on building the capacity and skill sets of both populations.

The United States spends approximately $428 billion annually on costs related to child abuse and neglect, including increased medical, juvenile, and adult justice costs. 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝘀 𝘀𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘂𝗽 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗱.

We know these are challenging times; funding streams are shifting, and the nonprofit landscape is evolving rapidly. But let us be clear: we are not shrinking back. We've been here doing the work for 45 years—and with your continued partnership, we plan on being here for 45 more.

Child abuse is not inevitable. It is preventable. And prevention begins upstream, before a family is in crisis, before systems intervene, before trauma takes root.
