Thank you to former Councilman Michael O’Brien, President of the Upper Washington Avenue Neighborhood Association, for the invitation to speak tonight about Albany’s future and the importance of independent oversight in local government.

We had a productive conversation on Albany’s fiscal challenges, realistic budgeting, housing affordability, homelessness, and the need to examine long-term debt and borrowing practices.

We also discussed innovative housing approaches like tiny homes and how partnerships between nonprofits, the City, and Albany County could potentially provide more humane and cost-effective solutions than relying on expensive emergency services and crisis response systems alone.

Thank you as well to Councilwoman Rachel Powell for attending and addressing neighborhood concerns related to DGS operations and parks maintenance.

Appreciate everyone who came out tonight and participated in the discussion about the future of our city and neighborhoods.

This Memorial Day, we honor and remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten.

May we always honor their legacy and keep their families in our thoughts.

I'm deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Congressman Barney Frank.

Growing up in Massachusetts, Barney Frank was my representative, and my first internship was in his office. I interned for him in DC shortly after the Dodd-Frank Act passed, the largest financial regulation bill since the Great Depression. This experience confirmed for me that I wanted to spend my career working in policy and politics.

Barney Frank was a fierce advocate for equality and civil rights and an inspiration to many. He was also the first member of Congress to voluntarily come out as gay.

May his memory be a blessing.

I had the opportunity to speak with students at the Students Inside Albany Conference hosted by the League of Women Voter of New York State about civic engagement, public service, and why young people’s voices matter.

I shared lessons from my own journey in government and reflected on a message from my grandfather, Rashi Fein: democracy may be imperfect, but it is always worth strengthening for future generations.

Thank you to the students and organizers for a great discussion about leadership and participation in our communities.

Tonight, the Albany Common Council passed a resolution calling on New York State to pass the New York Health Act — Senate Bill S3425 and Assembly Bill A1466 — before the end of the 2026 legislative session. Credit to Council Majority Leader Alfredo Balarin for introducing and sponsoring the resolution, and to the full Common Council for standing up for healthcare reform and working families.

I’ve been advocating for this issue for years, and was honored to recently speak at a healthcare forum at Rockefeller College alongside State Senator Gustavo Rivera and Assemblymember Gabriella Romero about the growing healthcare crisis facing New York and the urgent need for action.

It was especially meaningful that this resolution passed during Youth & Government Night, with Albany High School students serving as Councilmembers for the evening. This conversation is about the future they will inherit.

Healthcare should put people over profits.
