McKownville Fire Department Pride of the East Side
Volunteer Fire Dept Serving Eastern Guilderland
For emergencies, call 9-1-1 We are always looking for people to join.

McKownville Fire Department is 100% volunteer with neighbors helping neighbors. We average approximately 300 calls per year and operate four fire apparatus including Engine 57, Engine 55, Squad 53, and our reserve antique parade piece, Engine 56. While we respond to a wide variety of calls such as motor vehicle accidents, hazardous conditions, and structure fires, we do not run EMS. Our response a

rea runs roughly from SUNY Albany to the Adirondack Northway and south to the Bethlehem Town Line. We cover several campus buildings including the Indigenous Quad dormitories as well as Stuyvesant Plaza and part of I-87 in addition to our community residences. So whether you are a SUNY student passionate about the emergency services or a long time McKownville resident looking to try something new, whether looking to learn to be a firefighter or to support our administrative needs, if you have the time and the drive, there is a spot for you! You do not need to have experience and you do not need to reside within the McKownville Fire District to apply. Please reach out to us on Facebook, email, or give us a call!

🚧 New Firehouse Construction Update 🚧

We’re excited to share that all concrete footings have been poured and the foundation is now complete — a major milestone that officially establishes the building footprint and clears the way for vertical construction.

This progress has continued despite abnormally low temperatures and higher-than-average snowfall this winter. Thanks to strong coordination, careful site management, and the dedication of our construction partners, the project remains on schedule even in challenging weather conditions.

Structural steel has now been delivered and installation is underway. As the steel framework rises, the community will begin to see the new firehouse truly take shape.

Beyond improved operational readiness and safety, the new facility is being built with sustainability in mind. It will be significantly more energy-efficient than our current firehouse, featuring modern insulation, high-efficiency mechanical systems, and environmentally responsible design — reducing long-term operating costs and lowering our environmental footprint.

Thank you to our residents for your continued support. We look forward to sharing more updates as construction progresses through spring, summer, and fall 2026.

As we’re sure many of you can see by just driving by our station we are currently under construction of a whole new building!!! Unfortunately because of the project we will not be able to host our annual Halloween event this year 😢 We are very sorry but at the current state of the build we cannot safely host the event this year. Hopefully by this time next year we can get back to putting on our Halloween event for the kiddos in our district. We really appreciate the patience our community have given us during this process. Have a safe and enjoyable Halloween 🎃

Our Story

We are a fire-rescue department. Our department operates 4 in-service fire apparatus consisting of Engine 57, Engine 55 and Squad 53 and our reserve antique parade piece, Engine 56. Our general response area is from the Adirondack Northway east to SUNY Albany and south to the Bethlehem Town Line. Our response area includes the dormatories at the Indian Quadrangle of SUNY Albany as well as several other buildings on campus. In the past, we provided fire service coverage at the New York Giants training camp. Other areas in our district include Stuyvesant Plaza, 1450 Western Avenue and part of the Northway (I-87). Founded in 1918, 2018 marks our 100th year proudly and professionally volunteering for you.
