On May 4th of this year, President Biden announced that the White House will host a Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health this September. This is the first such conference held in over 50 years.
The goal of the Biden-Harris Administration is to end hunger, and to increase healthy eating and physical activity across the United States by 2030—as well as decreasing diet-related diseases and their associated social disparities. The White House reached out to key stakeholders for input to inform the national plan on how to achieve this goal.
The Food Pantries for the Capital District responded with 8 key strategies. Here are Strategies 7 and 8:
7. Fully integrate and fund a continuum of Food as Medicine (FAM) interventions - Veggie Rx, Medically Tailored Groceries, Medically Tailored Meals, Food Farmacies, Nutrition Education – through all public health plans such as Medicaid and Medicare.
8. Support a healthy dignified accessible charitable food system for those who are in need, fall through the cracks, or are unable to work full time, and in the case that Federal Nutrition Assistance Programs are not funded at a level to provide nutrition security.
