Many thanks to Buffalo Rising for their continued coverage of The White Elephant Bill. Jay DiLorenzo, President of the Preservation League of NYS, has said the bill “will prevent the loss of major historic properties through demolition by neglect and drive economic growth,” noting that every dollar in tax credits generates roughly four dollars in private investment.

Contact your state representatives to tell them you support this legislation before the session ends. cc: Preservation Buffalo Niagara Richardson Olmsted Campus Buffalo Central Terminal Senator April N.M. Baskin Assemblywoman Pamela Hunter - 128th District

The clock is ticking on the White Elephant bill, a proposed measure to address New York State’s largest and most chronically vacant historic buildings. In honor of Preservation Month, the League is shining a spotlight on a member benefit that unlocks savings at hotels that are members of Historic Hotels of America, the official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation for recognizing the nation’s finest historic hotels.

Because of our partnership with Historic Hotels of America, League members are eligible to use the Friends of Historic Hotels of America rate code (email us to get your member discount!) when they book at participating hotels through HistoricHotels.org, making it easy to stay somewhere meaningful while supporting the places you love. This rate offers up to 30% off the Best Available Rate at participating Historic Hotels of America member hotels, from landmark city center hotels to storied destination resorts and boutique inns. There are over 300 one-of-a-kind members in the program and nearly a third of them are offering the rate as of Preservation Month 2026.

This benefit is not just for May, though. Members can access it
throughout the year! Discover historic hotels participating in the rate code here: https://www.historichotels.org/us/hotel-deals/member-packages.php?search=top-nav&from=Friends-of-HHA
