Albany County Crime Victim and Sexual Violence Center staff facilitate a weekly women’s psycho educational group at Albany County Correctional Facility called “Breaking Barriers”. Members of this group have experienced interpersonal violence at some point in their lives.
Many members in our group have identified as victims of sexual violence, both inside and outside of the correctional facility. We want to ensure their voices are heard and they are represented. Trauma can often lead to maladaptive coping behaviors, such as drug use, to help manage pain. Our group members are not violent offenders but rather have experienced trauma that has lead to unsafe behaviors and incarceration.

April 29th was Denim Day and our Campus Services Coordinator was invited to an event held by the Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Awareness Interest Group at Albany Medical College. Students gathered to learn more about the history of Denim Day, connect with campus resources, take a moment of silence and hold a Denim Day walk throughout campus. We are so grateful for our continued partnership with this student organization and admire all the work they doing to raise awareness around DV and SA!

CVSVC partnered with Siena University during Sexual Assault Awareness Month for a community display in the student center.
The mini-clothesline project serves as a way for folks to provide their support of survivors by writing messages in mini tee-shirts. By displaying these messages, those around you and in the community can see they are heard, they are believed, and they are supported.
Thank you to the students and staff at Siena for their participation and for creating a supportive campus for survivors.
