Our thoughts are with the Menands Fire Department after a fire occurred yesterday in the apparatus bay of the Village of Menands municipal building (which houses the fire station and police department).

We commend the selfless firefighters from Menands and the Town of Colonie fire departments who responded quickly and extinguished the flames, then worked to salvage gear, equipment, and priceless memorabilia from the smoke-damaged building.

To all affected by yesterday’s fire: We stand with you during this difficult time. We are here to support you in any form needed to assist in the rebuilding process.

Multiple incidents 5/16/26

1st Call - Personal Injury Auto Crash

Approximately 12:24pm during our Flea Market Fundraiser, Westmere Fire Department was dispatched to a Personal Injury Auto Crash on Western Avenue near the restaurant The Scene. Fire department members mitigated hazards on both vehicles and assisted Guilderland Police Department with traffic control.

2nd Call - Personal Injury Auto Crash

At approximately 3:20pm, Westmere Fire Department was dispatched to a Personal Injury Auto Crash - Vehicle vs. Motorcycle in the area of RT 155/Western Ave. Upon arrival, crews determined one occupant of the vehicle was entrapped. Within minutes, the patient was successfully extricated. Crews assisted with traffic control and hazard mitigation. Both patients were turned over to Guilderland Emergency Medical Services for care.

3rd Call - Structure Fire

At approximately 5:57pm, Westmere Fire Department, along with mutual aid from Guilderland Fire Department and Fort Hunter Fire Company, responded to the 1800 block of Western Ave for a kitchen grease fire. On Monday evening, our members trained on how to properly respond to a flammable gas fire. If the tank containing flammable gas is exposed to fire and not cooled quickly enough, it can over pressurize and cause a BLEVE (Boiling Liquid Expanding V***r Explosion), or in layman's term when the tank explodes.

With summer around the corner, we want to make sure our residents understand the importance of propane safety. Make sure your tanks are properly filled and make sure your grills are at least 10 feet away from any structure.
