What’s better than a Boy Scout working on his Eagle Project. Two Boy Scouts working on their Eagle Projects.
On Saturday, Mills Cothren and Grant Laughlin were both doing projects for the Humane Society here in Albany. Mills made comfy beds for inside. Grant made outdoor shelters to provide shade and rain protection. Each project required many hours of planning and preparation work to get to this day. The boys had to coordinate with the shelter, design their projects, identify materials and equipment and plan for safety. They presented their plans to council. Once approved they requested donations and coordinated prep and build days. The boys assembled a crew of scouts, friends and parents to help with their projects. Of course, no job is complete until the paperwork is done. I’m hoping the boys can finish in the next couple weeks.
Mills would like to thank Dave and Heidi Ellion for serving as his mentors.
Grant would like to thank Wallace Bonner for serving as his mentor.
Special thanks to Lowe’s for very generously donating materials.

This weekend the boys got fired from the shredding event. They did Tearable work!
The rain delayed but couldn’t stop Troop 15 from supporting the community shred event. The good thing about the rain is, it kept the trucks from catching fire this year.

“BADGES?! We need some stinkin’ BADGES!”
About 200 scouts joined Troop 15 for merit badge weekend. Scouts earned badges in electronics chemistry, home repair, automotive repair, chess and a partial in mountain biking.
The good folks from South Georgia Tech brought a trailer full of simulators. The scouts learned how to operate forklifts, excavators, drones, a paint booth and more.
We did some good eatin’ too. Our chefs made pancakes and bacon, sandwiches, walking tacos followed by s’mores for dessert. The OA troop had an ice cream social. Sunday we had make your own eggs, pork or venison sausage. The scouts also wanted to try grapefruit, which I don’t think they will do again.

So there I was… camping near Helen Ga with Troop 15. The boys and adults were all in bed, exhausted after a long day. I was the last one up, waiting for the fire to burn down. Bigfoot walks up grabs a cup off the table fills it with Gatorade from the drink cooler. Chugs it down then fills and chugs a second. He set the cup down burped, looks over at me frozen stiff, mouth hanging open. Then he says in a low voice, “no one’s gonna believe you!”
Another fun weekend. 6:45 departure Saturday morning. Hike to Anna Ruby Falls, explored a little, joked a lot and ate good. We had MREs left from last trip for lunch. Kielbasa and potatoes for dinner. Since it was pie day we had a peanut butter cream pie. On Sunday, We took our time with breakfast, boiled omelets. Returned back to Albany by 4.

Troop 15 goes swampin’
This weekend we tried some new things; boiled omelets, pack stove cooking, MREs, soap fishing, hammock sleeping.
The craziest thing we saw was an alligator wearing a vest. Then we realized it was an investigator.
….and with that said the pictures can do the talking.

Ahh the annual Scout Lock-in! Nerf guns, white elephant, video games, junk food and stinky feet.
Grant made his famous cheesy garlic bread, Ellison made his grandma’s secret spaghetti sauce and we boiled some fettuccine until it was one mass. We washed it all down with Arnold Palmers.
Dads went sleep around 11, boys around 3. Not saying they got along but nothing bad enough to wake me up.
We got up at 7:30 to pack and prep for a pancake breakfast. Hunter learned to make the perfect pancake, Rust and Grant set up tables. Liam helped get everything out. Ellison learned how to use the dishwasher.
We were ready early…we are never ready early. The congregation was happy to have breakfast ready for them. Grant, Rust and Liam served. Hunter manned the grill. Ellison took our dishes and utensils to wash whenever we set them down.
The boys made some tummies happy and a little money.

This morning Troop 15 headed to Andersonville Cemetery to pay respects by laying wreathes honoring Americas fallen heroes. The boys continue to uphold their commitment to duty to country and show reverence by participating in events like Wreaths Across America.
Pictures say it better than I ever could.
