Join us for NAMI NYS’s next Advocacy Lunch and Learn!

Mental health stigma continues to impact AAPI communities, often fueled by harmful stereotypes and the persistent “Model Minority Myth.” These misconceptions can create barriers to seeking support, increase pressure on young people, and contribute to mental health challenges that often go unrecognized.

On July 6 at 1 PM ET, hear from Ada Lin, Senior Manager of Youth and Family Leadership, as we explore the unique mental health experiences of AAPI youth, the challenges they face, and the solutions young people themselves are advocating for.

Mental health conversations deserve nuance, compassion, and evidence-based understanding — not viral misinformation or sensationalized “cure” narratives.

In a recent article for PLOS Mental Health, Taylor Locke explores the growing spread of misinformation surrounding schizophrenia, fad diets, and online health claims. The piece highlights the importance of media literacy, responsible public conversations, and ensuring treatment decisions are guided by qualified healthcare professionals.

💬 “People living with schizophrenia deserve accuracy, compassion, and discussions grounded in careful evidence and human understanding.”

The article also challenges harmful stereotypes surrounding schizophrenia while emphasizing the importance of evidence-based care, community support, and lived experience perspectives.

Thank you to Assemblymember Jessica González-Rojas for her continued advocacy on this issue. This bill would erase the term “excited delirium” from State government use and official policy. The term is not evidence-based and is overwhelmingly used in contexts involving justice in black communities. The bill has passed the Senate, and time is running out to pass it in the Assembly! Visit the NAMI NYS Advocacy page to learn more about this and other bills NAMI NYS is advocating for.

Lived experience drives meaningful change.

Alanah Richardson, a graduate student at Fordham University and a person living with bipolar disorder, is conducting research on the realities of managing bipolar disorder between psychiatric appointments. By sharing your experience, you can help shed light on the challenges, supports, and unmet needs that exist beyond the clinical setting.
