This isn’t just a new roadway. It’s a new chapter for Syracuse.

This is the ceremonial first vehicle to travel through the newly reconfigured I-81/I-481 northern & southern interchanges that opened yesterday, marking a major milestone in the I-81 Viaduct Project. Bringing us one step closer to reconnecting neighborhoods divided for more than 60 years.

🚧 A historic milestone on the I-81 Viaduct Project 🚧

Today, NYSDOT Commissioner Dominguez announced on behalf of Governor Kathy Hochul the completion of the reconfigured northern and southern interchanges connecting I-81 and I-481 in the Town of Cicero and City of Syracuse in Onondaga County.

Three years after breaking ground, all major infrastructure within the footprint where future I-81 and future Business Loop 81 will meet is now open to traffic. This marks a major milestone in the largest transportation undertaking in NYSDOT history.

This milestone brings us one step closer to improved connectivity, safer travel, and restoring light and opportunity to neighborhoods that have lived in the shadow of the I-81 viaduct for more than 60 years.

🚂 A true giant is rolling through New York.

The world’s largest operating steam locomotive, Union Pacific’s Big Boy No. 4014, made a stop in Cheektowaga yesterday during its first-ever journey to the East Coast.

Today, this piece of living history continues east across New York on a rail network that NYSDOT rail safety inspectors help keep safe by inspecting thousands of miles of track across the state.

Today, NYSDOT Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez joined state and local leaders in Kingston to announce a $1.1 million investment in Ulster County Area Transit (UCAT) through Governor Kathy Hochul’s Innovative Mobility Initiative.

The funding will help launch an on-demand microtransit service beginning in Ellenville, expanding transit coverage and improving access for residents who have limited transportation options. The service will better connect people in outlying areas to jobs, services, and existing transit routes.

Ulster County is one of five counties receiving funding through the Innovative Mobility Initiative, which is investing $6 million in transit systems across Upstate New York. The program supports innovative solutions that improve accessibility, expand mobility options, and help connect more New Yorkers to the places they need to go.

By investing in flexible, technology-enabled transportation services, New York State is helping strengthen communities, improve quality of life, and ensure more residents have access to safe, reliable transportation.

Today at Jennings Landing in Albany, NYSDOT Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez joined state and local partners to highlight the extraordinary impact of the Empire State Trail and the release of a groundbreaking new economic impact report.

The Empire State Trail isn’t just a trail. It’s an economic engine, a tourism destination, and a connection between communities across New York.

A new report found that the 750-mile Empire State Trail generates an annual economic impact comparable to that of a major university, while also delivering public health, environmental, and quality-of-life benefits statewide.

NYSDOT is proud to have helped make that possible through 26 projects totaling $65 million, creating more than 215 miles of pedestrian and bicycle facilities and improving over 70 roadway crossings along the trail.

From family walks and bike rides to supporting local businesses and tourism, the Empire State Trail continues to strengthen communities and connect New Yorkers to the places they live, work, and explore.

And we’re not done yet. Through projects like the Albany Skyway and future connections across the Hudson River, we’re continuing to build safer, stronger links between communities and the nation’s premier statewide trail network.

It’s going to be a HOT one, NY! ☀️🌡️

That cracked car window? Not enough.

On a hot day, the temperature inside a parked vehicle can rise dangerously fast, putting children and pets at serious risk in just minutes. Shade won’t protect them. Cracked windows won’t either.

If you’re heading inside, take them with you. Every time.
Let’s keep everyone safe this summer.

You can't always MOVE OVER. But you can always SLOW DOWN.

When someone is stranded or working on the side of the highway - whether it's a highway crew or a driver with a flat - slowing down can be the difference between life and death.

The Rule is Simple:
👉 Move over when you can.
👉 Slow down when you can’t.

06/07/2026

What’s today’s date?

June 7th

You know what that means...

Yeah, we agree... the trend is soooo last year, but now that we have your attention - slow down in work zones!
