On May 5, 2026, District Judge Mae A. D’Agostino hosted 12 students from Capital Region BOCES. Judge D’Agostino talked to the students about her path to becoming a Federal District Judge and what the “Rule of Law and the American Dream” mean. The students then participated in an impromptu mock “trial” with students having roles as Judges, Prosecutor, Defense Attorney and Jury. Afterward, the students participated in group discussions with Probation (Kristin Bent, Chelsea Deyo, Mark Levigne and Dan Casullo), Federal Public Defenders office (Emma Reynolds) and the Assistant US Attorney’s office

On April 16 2026 Magistrate Judge Mitchell Katz hosted students from Morgan Road Middle School for a program which included presentations by Ryan Matt from the Bureau of Alcohol, To***co, Fi****ms and Explosives and NYS Trooper Kevin Conners with his K9 companion, Toddie. Following lunch, Judge Katz lead the presentation on the Court’s 2026 Law Day program: The Rule of Law. Accompanied by Federal Court Bar Association member and local defense attorney, Christina Cagnina they engaged the students in what the Rule of Law means, what possible consequences could be if the rule of law is not followed and the role of the courts in ensuring the rule of law is applied to all.

On April 9, 2026 District Judge Elizabeth Coombe hosted students from Jamesville Dewitt High School for the Court’s 2026 Law Day program: The Rule of Law. Accompanied by Federal Court Bar Association President, Brian Butler they engaged the students in what the Rule of Law means, what possible consequences could be if the rule of law is not followed and the role of the courts in ensuring the rule of law is applied to all. The students then had the opportunity to observe a naturalization ceremony welcoming 35 new U.S. Citizens in a ceremony presided by District Judge Coombe.

The Local Rules Committee for the Northern District of New York is soliciting proposed amendments to the Local Rules of Practice. If you wish to submit a proposed amendment to the Local Rules of Practice for consideration by the Rules Committee, you may do so via email at [email protected]. Proposed amendments must be received no later than the close of business on Friday, April 3, 2026 to receive consideration. If the proposed amendment is adopted by the Rules Committee and the Northern District of New York Board of Judges, they will become effective January 1, 2027.

The NDNY is pleased to announce the swearing-in of Carla B. Freedman as U.S. Magistrate Judge on 2/11/26 by Chief District Judge Brenda K. Sannes. Judge Freedman has filled the vacancy created by the retirement of Magistrate Judge Therese Wiley Dancks. Judge Freedman served as the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of New York from October 2021 through February 2025 and previously served as the Narcotics Chief in that office from January 2018 to October 2021; she joined the office as an Assistant United States Attorney in 2007. Before joining the United States Attorney’s office, Ms. Freedman was an assistant district attorney in the New York County District Attorney’s office in Manhattan from 1988 to 2004. Judge Freedman received her Bachelor of Arts from Syracuse University in May 1985 and her Juris Doctor from New York Law School in June 1988. It is with great pleasure that we welcome Judge Freedman to the bench and wish her continued success in this exciting new chapter of her distinguished career.
