And just like that, we saved Orange County taxpayers millions.

My and Senator Skoufis’ bill recently passed, which authorizes Orange County to establish a sales tax revenue distribution agreement with local municipalities. This amounts to an estimated $20 Million for our local governments this year alone to use on projects that benefit the entire community.

While never authorized to, Orange County was distributing this money in direct violation of state law. This was flagged and distribution stopped, potentially causing catastrophic budget pitfalls for towns, villages, and cities across the county. Pitfalls that would have potentially led to increased taxes around the county.

I am glad to have taken this on with Senator Skoufis and fixed it once and for all.

Another win for New Yorkers everywhere.

Many of us have experienced this: Wanting to buy self-defense spray to protect ourselves or our loved ones, only to find that NY State bars almost every business from selling it.

Today thanks to my, and Senator Scarcella-Spanton’s, bill that changes for good.

Once this legislation is signed by the Governor, you will be able to easily purchase pepper spray at businesses around the state. As it should have been all along.

Giving people access to a non-lethal tool to defend themselves from their would-be attackers and escape from a dangerous situation could be lifesaving. I am proud to have delivered real change for the safety of New Yorkers.

We finally did it.

Since I arrived in the Assembly in 2023, I have fought every year to get funding in the NYS Budget for American Legion’s Boys State and Girls State. These are week-long programs that engage high-school students in civic leadership. Many students that have been a part of it have gone onto leadership roles around the nation in all fields.

$200,000 total has finally been allocated to these amazing programs so that NY can once again guide our future leaders to success!

I am proud to announce that one of my bills introduced last year made it into this year's budget!

Anyone who knows me knows I support the implementation of electric vehicles. Having personally spent decades building solar and electric vehicles with high schoolers and competing in races across the nation, I know the power this technology has to change the way we think of transposition.

However, the statewide mandate regarding the transition of school buses posed serious logistical, operational, and financial risks for many school districts -- particularly rural, geographically large, or resource-limited districts.

According to NYSERDA's own September 2023 Roadmap “The estimated incremental cost to transition approximately 3,000 vehicles to electric school buses (including associated chargers) by 2027 is roughly $780 million." Those 3,000 vehicles would represent just 8% of the state's school bus fleet, meaning the complete transition would require a drastically larger sum of money.

In short, the mandate would have bankrupted school districts and caused massive financial burden on taxpayers across the state. Electric buses can be a reality, but we need to be thoughtful on how we implement it.

This was a well needed change, and I am proud to have delivered for school districts across NYS.

Today throughout District 99 I joined locals and municipal leaders in commemorating Memorial Day. In the lives of service that we all lead day-to-day, it is beyond important to take this time to truly honor those that have given their own lives in service to our great nation.

Without their sacrifices, their fight and determination to protect those who they will never meet, nothing we are able to do today and each day after would be possible.

If you know someone who's lost a friend or family member who served, I sincerely implore you to take time today to say thank you. It means more than you could ever know.

This month, I had the honor of attending the Orange County Veterans Picnic and spending time with the men and women who have served our country with courage, sacrifice, and dedication.

It was a great day filled with community, conversation, and appreciation for our veterans and their families. Events like this are an important reminder that we must continue supporting and recognizing those who have given so much in service to our nation.

Thank you to everyone who helped organize this wonderful event and to all of our veterans for your service and sacrifice.

Last week, the New York State Assembly passed my legislation (A.3223A) to allow veterans of the United States Armed Forces to fish for free in state parks under the jurisdiction of a state agency.

Our veterans have sacrificed so much in service to our country, and this bill is one small way to give back and recognize their dedication and sacrifice. Fishing is not only a great outdoor activity, but for many veterans it can also provide peace, relaxation, and time with family and friends.

I am proud to support legislation that helps make our parks and recreational opportunities more accessible to those who served our nation.

Thank you to all of our veterans for your service and sacrifice.

Where In the World is Chris Eachus’ Bill?

Today's bill is A3413, which would give Orange, Rockland, Putnam, and Dutchess representatives on the MTA Board one vote each, as opposed to sharing only a single collective vote.

While all of us here in Orange and Rockland County have to pay the MTA directly in the form of the Payroll Tax and taking from our county sales taxes, we do not currently have independent votes on the board that advises on where all of that money, to the tune of $21.3 billion, goes.

This is taxation without true representation, and it must end.

Last week, I was honored to meet with the 11th-grade students of Yeshiva Darchei Torah during their visit to the New York State Capitol as part of their civics education program.

The students came to Albany to advocate on issues important to them and to learn more about the legislative process and civic engagement.

During our conversation, I spoke about the importance of voting, public service, and staying involved in your community and I also shared about my career as a teacher.

It is always inspiring to see young people engaged, asking thoughtful questions, and taking an active interest in government and civic participation. Thank you to the students and staff for taking the time to visit the Capitol last week.
