A huge day for Albany! Yesterday marked the grand opening of the 22,000 sq ft Albany West Community Center located at 520 Livingston Ave. A big thank-you to the elected officials, community members, and City of Albany employees who worked tirelessly to make this vision a reality.

The new center includes meeting rooms, a computer lab, an arcade, fitness spaces, a community kitchen and garden, an indoor basketball court, and soon, an outdoor pool — providing a safe, accessible space that West Hill neighbors truly deserve.

This idea felt especially true as I participated in both the Highlighting Women in Educational Leadership Workshop at Albany Law School and the NYSUT Members of Color Affinity and Action (MOCCA) Conference.

In each space, I was reminded that leadership and learning are reciprocal processes. We grow not only by sharing our knowledge, but also by listening, reflecting, and learning from the diverse experiences of others. These events reaffirmed the power of community, representation, and ongoing professional development, demonstrating that our collective wisdom is one of our greatest tools in shaping equitable and impactful educational environments
