While visiting our CARES UP first responder partners on Long Island, Nadine and Garra also attended the Suffolk County Sheriff's Law Enforcement Wellness Conference, to learn and also share information about our su***de prevention initiatives that are tailored for first responders. The conference brought together experts, practical tools, and meaningful resources designed to help first responders prioritize their mental and physical health, enhance personal and professional resilience, and stay strong in the face of daily challenges.

Nadine and Garra were also able to meet former Major League Baseball player, and three-time World Series Champion, Darryl Strawberry, who shared his personal journey of resilience, recovery, and overcoming addition.

Mental health affects us all. Whether you’ve struggled personally, supported a loved one, or simply believe that no one should face mental health challenges alone, joining a NAMI Walk is a powerful way to make an impact.

By participating, you’re helping raise awareness, reduce stigma, and support the free education, advocacy, and resources that the National Alliance on Mental Illness provides to individuals and families affected by mental illness.

🚶‍♀️ Walk to show support.
💚 Walk to honor loved ones.
🤝 Walk to build a community of hope and understanding.
📢 Walk because mental health matters.

Together, we can create a world where people feel empowered to seek help, share their stories, and know they are never alone.

Nadine and Garra traveled to Long Island last week to visit several CARES UP partner agencies across region. Each first responder agency represented a different stage in the implementation and growth of their peer support and wellness initiatives.

It was inspiring to see the commitment these agencies have made to supporting the mental health and well-being of their personnel:

✅ The Suffolk County Sheriff's Office has reached the Sustainability Phase, demonstrating a strong commitment to maintaining and strengthening their established CARES UP program.

✅ Suffolk County Police Department 911 Communications and Nassau County Corrections are currently in Year 2 of Implementation, continuing to build momentum, expand capacity, and strengthen their peer support infrastructure.

✅ Suffolk County Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services is beginning year one of Implementation, taking important first steps toward developing a comprehensive wellness and peer support framework for their members.

Every agency’s journey looks different, but the shared commitment to supporting first responders remains the same. We are grateful for the opportunity to work alongside these dedicated professionals as they build cultures of resilience, connection, and support.

This week, first responders from agencies that are involved in our CARES UP grant gathered in Albany, NY for our CARES UP Community of Practice event. It was a great opportunity to get together to build connection, communication, and resiliency. We heard powerful presentations from Dr. Erin Craw who discussed navigating challenging conversations and practicing effective communication, as well as Dr. Rebeccah Bernard who shared valuable insight on first responder experiences in moral injury and how to move forward.

We've been working closely with construction organizations from the Capital Region through our Building Hope Through Action (BHTA) project, which is part of our Capital Connect initiative, funded by the CDC. It was great to have the opportunity to gather together to discuss the progress that's been made in the past year, and how this project has enhanced mental wellness and su***de prevention in their workplace.
