At 0600, Thursday 01 May, 35 cadets and 7 chaperones from the SGT Henry Johnson Battalion departed Albany International Airport for Daytona Beach Florida. They were among the 7 Physical Fitness teams selected to represent the 2nd Brigade at the JROTC Physical Fitness National Competition. There were over 65 teams representing schools from across the United States. Albany High was the ONLY School to have a team in all three categories; all male, all female and mixed. Thank you to the chaperones who made this possible and a BIG shout out to First Sergeant Reome for organizing all the logistics involved in planning, coordinating and executing the event!

After arriving in Orlando, the cadets visited Disney Springs, followed by dinner at Golden Coral. After dinner they went to the hotel where they spent several hours at the pool. After a long day, the lights were out at 10:00 PM. On Friday the cadets went to Universal Studios after which they drove to Daytona Beach and mentally prepared themselves for the competition on Saturday.

Saturday morning began early with the Girls Team reporting for the 3K run at 0730. The competition was tough as all teams represented the best in their respective brigades. All of our teams did well with the all-male team earning the 5th place trophy in the pull-up competition.

On Sunday we departed Daytona Beach at 0415 for Orlando Airport. After returning the 7 rental vans, the cadets and chaperones checked in for their 0750 flight. After a slight weather delay, the flight departed Orlando and arrived in Albany at 1100.

A fun filled, adventure packed 4 days for the SGT Henry Johnson Battalion !!!

This past weekend eight cadets from the SGT Henry Johnson Battalion attended the Norwich University Challenge weekend.

Leadership Challenge Weekend is 43 hours of action-packed leadership training and adventure showcasing our cadet lifestyle. Students will develop their leadership skills, practice teamwork, play in our Cyber War Room, and hear from outstanding leaders.
Activities may include training on our indoor climbing wall, hiking Paine Mountain, participating in the Leadership Reaction Course, water survival training, a physical fitness test, and drill and ceremony.

In addition to interaction with other participants, they also had the opportunity to talk with Norwich Cadet Ryan Linn, the SGT Henry Johnson Battalion commander for School Year 2023-2024. Ryan is attending Norwich on a 4-year Army ROTC scholarship. He related to our cadets that with self-discipline, commitment and hard work, one can reach his/her goals. Veterans Day 2024 was a busy day for the cadets of the SGT Henry Johnson Battalion. It started with a 1015 formation and the promotion of 20 cadets. At 1100 hours the cadets stepped off as part of the Albany Veterans Day Parade. Over 100 cadets participated in the Parade, the largest number EVER. Immediately following the parade over 80 cadets descended on the Weigand VFW Post on Central Avenue for an open house and lunch. A big shot out to the members of the Post for supporting the event and Ms. Gaudino for organizing it. Eight other cadets participated in the Gold Star Family dinner at the Zaloga American Legion Post. Thank you to Mr. Hochreiter (Superintendent), Ms. Smith (BOE Member) and Ms. Lawyer, (Citizenship Academy Principal) for showing their support of JROTC and the March Falcons by marching in the Parade. It is great to see all the support for our Nations veterans.

At 5:50 AM on Thursday, 24 October, 35 cadets from the SGT Henry Johnson Battalion departed Albany International Airport for Fort Knox Kentucky to attend the National Raider Challenge. The National Raider Challenge is a high intensity competition that tests JROTC Cadets’ physical fitness and teamwork. The 2024 JROTC National Raider Challenge is the 2nd annual national championship event. More than 300 teams from around the country competed for the title of Raider National Champion. The cadets departed Fort Knox at 5:40 AM Sunday, 27 October. An action packed 72 hours.

Only 6 schools from the 2nd Brigade attended the event, and Albany High was the only one to have 3 teams, male, female and mixed. There were 145 teams in the Challenge Division, 50 male, 15 female and 80 mixed. This was the second year for the male and female teams and the first for the mixed team. All of our teams held their own in what is the most grueling physical contests for high school students. Our male and female teams were earned the highest scores in the 2nd Brigade. The female team earned a 4th place trophy in the 5K run and the males place 16 out of 50 overall. The males also earned 6th place in the Gauntlet and 7th in 5K run.

To compete at the National level is an honor in itself, and to earn the scores they did is outstanding.

A big shout out to our chaperones, Mr. & Mrs. Jones from the North Albany American Legion Post, Staff Sergeant Butler and Ms. Vicki Smith and LTC Hutchinson. Without their Support, the trip would not have been possible.
