🌲Forest Fact Friday 🤯

🐻 Did you know the Lincoln National Forest is home to many wildlife species including bears, racoons, skunks, squirrels and chipmunks.

🦨 All these furry creatures have something in common, and that is they can be attracted to food while you camp. Remember you are visiting their home and it’s important to camp safely by following these tips:

❌ Never feed the wildlife
🍫 Keep food, toothpaste, gum or anything fragrant out of your tent and store it properly
🚯 Properly dispose of trash
🔙 Keep a safe distance from wildlife at least 100 yards away

Attention Lincoln National Forest visitors!

⛈ The Forest has received several inches of rain over the past few weeks, creating extremely muddy and slick conditions on many Forest Roads and Trail Systems. We’re asking visitors and locals to use extra caution as you explore.

🚨 Remember: Many locations across the Forest have limited or no cell coverage. Please plan ahead, travel prepared, and make safety your priority.

🚫 Please do NOT drive around muddy areas or create new routes.
Driving off the established road can cause significant damage to forest resources, widen existing roads, and lead to long‑term erosion issues.

🚙 If your vehicle begins tearing up the road, stop and turn around, or park and walk to your destination. This helps protect the Forest and prevents additional damage.

📞 If you find a Forest Road or Trail that has been washed out or is impassable, please let us know so we can alert our staff. Many areas will need attention moving forward, and we appreciate your patience as we work with our partners to assess and repair damages.

🙏 Thank you for respecting the Forest, and for sharing any reports with us. We truly appreciate your help!

🌲The Lincoln National Forest is proud to host an incredible crew from Conservation Corps New Mexico who are hard at work reducing hazardous fuels on both the Smokey Bear and Sacramento Ranger Districts this fall.

🍁Throughout September, the crew has been diligently thinning and piling small-diameter trees near the Sawmill Trailhead and Grindstone Lake. Their efforts near private land boundaries are helping prepare these areas for future prescribed burns that will improve forest health and reduce wildfire risk within the Wildland Urban Interface or WUI where Forest meets community.

🎃 In October, the crew will move over to the Sacramento Ranger District to begin work around Denny Hill, continuing important fuels reduction that supports recent mastication and ongoing wildfire resilience and forest restoration in the area.

🙏We’re grateful for this hardworking team and the positive impact they’re making on the forest each day!

🦌Hunting outfits may have changed, but the season, and the shared responsibilities, remain the same.

Starting September 1 and continuing through fall and into winter, various hunting seasons will be underway across the Forest.

If you’re out enjoying the trails, camping, or exploring, please stay aware of your surroundings.

🔥Prescribed Fire Update - Sept. 28, 2026, 10:00 A.M. 🔥

The Crooked Pile Burn received nearly 4 inches of moisture last week and is looking excellent. This moisture has aided our crews during mop-up operations, assisting with reducing any remaining heat. Our crews will continue to visit and be in the area over the next few days.

Until our next update check out these project progression photos of the Crooked area! This hazardous fuels reduction on Forest lands near rural communities and homes is showing strong signs of resilience.

👉Stay updated by following our page here or visiting our website: https://www.fs.usda.gov/r03/lincoln/fire.

🙏Thank you for all the support throughout this project!
