We often hear adults say, "Kids don't have real problems," or "They're too young to feel stressed."

Kids feel more than we give them credit for.

World Mental Health Day, observed every October 10, reminds us mental health matters at every age, including childhood.

In 2023, 4 in 10 U.S. high school students reported persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness, according to the CDC. Younger children struggle too, even when they don't have the words to say so.

A child's mental health shapes how they learn, make friends, and handle hard days. What kids feel today shapes the adults they become.

Take their feelings seriously. Ask about their day and listen to the answer. Notice changes in sleep, appetite, or mood. Let them know every feeling is okay to talk about.

If you're living with violence at home, you might believe your children are safe as long as no one hurts them. Many parents hold onto this hope. The truth is harder, and knowing the truth helps you protect them.

Children don't need to be hit to be harmed. A child becomes a victim of domestic violence when they see the adults in their home fight, hear threats or crying from another room, or live with the fear and tension abuse leaves behind.

Kids carry these moments with them. Some become anxious, clingy, or angry. Some struggle to sleep or focus in school. Others go quiet and blame themselves, believing they caused the fighting or should have stopped it.

None of this means you've failed your children. Reaching out for help is one of the most protective steps a parent takes.

Tell your child the violence is not their fault. Keep routines as steady as possible. Let them talk about what they saw and felt, and listen without judgment. Most of all, get support for both of you.

If you need help, call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 or text START to 88788. In an emergency, call 911.

Thank you, Chris and Team, for the kind words and the support, always! 🥹❤️

We received a beautiful letter thanking us for our support of Kids Inc., and we are thankful for that! We are blessed to support these types of organizations when we can!

But the reality is, the people who continue to advocate for children in their lowest moments should not have to thank us. The thanks go to them.

Thank you, Cambri and team, for the work you continue to do!

When a family faces domestic violence, hard choices follow. Too often, those choices protect the adult causing harm. A warning sign gets brushed off to keep the peace. A child's fear gets explained away. A family stays quiet to avoid upsetting someone.

Each of those moments tells a child their safety comes second.

Children who live with violence at home need adults who put them first. Believe them when they speak up. Take their fear seriously. Make their safety the deciding factor every time.

World Teachers' Day, celebrated every October 5, honors the teachers who shape young lives around the world.

Teachers see kids almost every day. They know which student lights up during art, who needs an extra minute to answer, and when a cheerful child suddenly goes quiet.

Attention like this matters. For some children, a teacher is the first adult to notice something is wrong and the first person they trust enough to tell.

To the teachers in Otero and Lincoln Counties, thank you for the extra patience, the hallway check-ins, and the times you spoke up for a child. You make our community safer for kids.

Happy World Teachers' Day from all of us at Kid's Inc.

October is National Bullying Prevention Month, a time for families, schools, and communities to work together so every child feels safe.

Most kids won't walk in the door and say, "I'm being bullied." Instead, they say they have a stomachache before school. They stop talking about a friend they used to mention every day. They come home quiet and head straight to their room.

Here's how you help.

Listen first. When your child opens up, even about something small, put the phone down and let them finish. Kids share more when they feel heard.

Notice changes. Pay attention to shifts in sleep, appetite, grades, or friendships. A child who goes quiet is often telling you something.

Speak up. If you see a child being bullied, step in or tell a trusted adult. Teach your kids to do the same.

Stay close. Kids with even one safe adult in their corner handle hard days better. Be the adult your child knows they come to first.

Every child deserves to feel safe at school, online, and at home.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time to recognize people affected by abuse at home and the support available to them.

When most people picture domestic violence, they picture two adults. But kids live in those homes too. They hear the arguments through bedroom walls. They notice when a parent cries in the car. They feel the tension at the dinner table, even when no one says a word.

Nearly 1 in 5 children are exposed to violence between their parents or caregivers during childhood. Domestic violence is also the most common caregiver risk factor among U.S. child abuse and neglect victims. Kids who grow up around violence at home early in life are twice as likely to need child protective services by age 9.

Behind every number is a child who needs a safe adult. The good news is early support makes a real difference. Kids heal best when someone notices, believes them, and helps the whole family find a path forward.

At Kid's Inc., we support children in Otero and Lincoln Counties through forensic interviews, family advocacy, and crisis counseling.

A Child Advocacy Center is more than a building. It is six kinds of care working together, each one there to make a hurting child feel safer and more supported.

Specialized forensic interviews mean that a child tells their story once to someone trained to listen with patience, so they are never made to relive it again and again.

Trauma-informed mental health helps a child work through the hard feelings and find their footing, so the weight they carry grows lighter over time.

Medical evaluations look after a child's health and wellbeing, giving families answers and peace of mind.

Comprehensive advocacy puts someone in the family's corner, guiding them through each step so they never feel lost or alone.

Multidisciplinary team case reviews bring professionals from across the community together, so nothing falls through the cracks and every decision keeps the child at the center.

And a child-friendly facility means the whole experience happens in a warm, welcoming place, not a cold office, so a child feels safe from the moment they walk in.

None of these stand alone. Together they surround a child with protection, comfort, and a real path toward healing. This is the work your community makes possible.
