On the eve of the anniversary of June 6th 1944, D-Day we should take a moment to reflect upon what our brothers in arms did.
Nearly 160,000 Allied troops landed, and over 4,400 of them died that day.

The Supreme Allied Commander, General Dwight D. Eisenhower, made the decision on June 5th to proceed with Operation Overlord. His order of the day follows:

SUPREME HEADQUARTERS
ALLIED EXPEDITIONARY FORCE

Soldiers, Sailors, and Airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Force!

You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hope and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you. In company with our brave Allies and brothers-in-arms on other Fronts, you will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the elimination of N**i tyranny over the oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world.

Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well equipped and battle-hardened. He will fight savagely.

But this is the year 1944! Much has happened since the N**i triumphs of 1940-41. The United Nations have inflicted upon the Germans great defeats, in open battle, man-to-man. Our air offensive has seriously reduced their strength in the air and their capacity to wage war on the ground. Our Home Fronts have given us an overwhelming superiority in weapons and munitions of war, and placed at our disposal great reserves of trained fighting men. The tide has turned! The free men of the world are marching together to Victory!

I have full confidence in your courage, devotion to duty and skill in battle. We will accept nothing less than full Victory!

Good luck! And let us beseech the blessing of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking.

We attended a wonderful banquet hosted by Support Our Soldiers of Alabama. This organization was founded by the parents of Lcpl Thomas Rivers and does incredible work for our service members.

The event was MC'd by Janice Rogers WBRC and featured a keynote address from Retired Sgt. Jeff Struecker. He was awarded the Silver Star for his actions in Mogadishu, better known as Black Hawk Down.

Please consider supporting their ongoing mission.

We had a very busy and rewarding Memorial Day. Our day began with a private ceremony alongside the parents of Lcpl Thomas Rivers, followed by the main ceremony at the Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo.

Next, we held a brief ceremony at the plaque behind the new Alabaster City Hall. This plaque was originally erected by James Phillips, owner of the Buck Creek Cotton Mill, to honor the mill employees who fell during WWII.

We concluded the day by joining the employees at Lowe's of Alabaster for their ceremony and the playing of Taps.

It was a truly full and meaningful day of remembrance.

Looks like a lot of volunteers showed up to place flags on every grave marker at the National Cemetary in Montevallo. Several members of VFW POST 12185 were on hand to assist.
Memorial Day is to honor and remember those who gave their life for us in defense of our country and our way of life. Please remember this as you enjoy your friends, families, and backyard cookouts.

Stop by and say hi. We are in front of Lowe's in Alabaster until 2pm.
