FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How do I know if I qualify?
You must have graduated from an accredited high school or G.E.D. Candidates must be within the age range of 18 years through 31 years at the time of the written examination, no felony convictions, and not currently on probation or parole. Candidates must possess a valid operator’s license, free of revocation or suspension.
What if I have points on my driver’s license?
You must possess a valid driver’s license before appointment, free of revocation or suspension. Candidates having six or more points on their driving record at the time of appointment will be disqualified from further consideration. Time of appointment is the first day of paid employment. An applicant having a valid driver’s license from another state will be accepted conditionally provided that, if selected, an Ohio driver’s license must be obtained prior to hiring.
What happens after I apply?
You will be notified by your indicated preference (mail or email) of your date, time and location to take the civil service examination. This examination is open to all who meet the minimum qualifications and requirements listed. The selection process will consist of a competitive examination, physical ability test and a thorough background investigation. Final appointment is contingent upon the candidate passing a comprehensive medical examination and psychological evaluation.
What bonus credit can I get?
Candidates who pass the written examination are eligible for the below bonus credits. However, bonus credit cannot exceed a total of 40% of the candidate’s passing written examination grade.
Candidates who have been resident citizens within the corporate limits of the City of Akron continuously for at least one year immediately prior to the examination, and who remain resident citizens of the City of Akron throughout the remainder of the selection process, will have a 20% residency bonus added to their passing grade.
Candidates who have successfully completed at least 32 semester or 45 quarter hours of accredited college course work may be awarded education credit equal to 3% of their passing written examination grade.
Candidates who have been honorably discharged from the armed forces of the United States and have served at least 180 days of active duty will be awarded 20% of their passing written examination grade.
Candidates who are certified Paramedics and/or EMTs may be awarded credit of up to 7% of their passing written examination grade.
Bonus credit cannot exceed a total of 40% of the candidate’s passing written examination grade. Candidates must submit proof of college course work in the form of degrees or official college transcripts and/or a copy of their DD214 at or before the written examination in order to be eligible to receive the appropriate bonus credits. Do I have to live in the City of Akron in order to take the test?
No, however, candidates who have been resident citizens within the corporate limits of the City of Akron continuously for at least one year immediately prior to the examination, and who remain resident citizens of the City of Akron throughout the remainder of the selection process, will have a 20% residency bonus added to their passing grade.
How long is the training for a Firefighter/Medic?
The length of the Akron Fire Division Training Academy will generally be between 6 and 13 weeks depending on the certifications held by the individual hired and whether the training academy is conducted by the Akron Fire Division after appointment or by another accredited Fire Academy prior to appointment. All firefighters must be certified by the State of Ohio with their Firefighter I and II certifications in order to be sworn in as Firefighter/Medics. In addition to the Firefighter I and II certifications, the City of Akron requires Akron Fire Division specific training prior to being sworn in.
Depending on existing circumstances of the City of Akron, candidates may be required to:
Attend an outside accredited fire academy paid for by the City of Akron on their own time without pay before appointment or;
Attend an accredited fire academy put on by the City of Akron on their own time without pay before appointment or;
Attend the Akron Fire Academy training after appointment and receive a training wage.
The Firefighter apprenticeship program is 3 ½ years. EMT training is 130 hours. Paramedic school is one year with continuing education requirements to maintain certification. Ongoing training is required in all aspects of the duties of a Firefighter/Medic’s career.
What is the salary for Firefighter/Medics?
AFTER APPOINTMENT, newly hired candidates will receive a training wage of $15.00 per hour. Upon successful completion of all required academy training and securing necessary certifications, the training wage will increase to at least $22.83 per hour. Failure to complete the required training and/or acquire the required certifications will result in disqualification for the position or termination. Appointment is the first day of paid employment.
