Today we had the privilege of hosting a student enrolled in the boces (Sanborn) befo/emt program. Part of the program they have to go to some firehouses and talk to the members and see different equipment.
The student we had was Riley McKnight from the Newfane school district. We decided to show her our pumper/tanker that has 3000 gallons of water on it , in her words she said when it was emptying out that is one big pool. She also was amazed that it only took 18 minutes to fill with one 2 and half off our in house fill site.
When Riley first came into the station we wanted to get to know her goals for the program she is in.
She wasn't sure about the befo aspect of it but was looking forward to the ems part ( Ultimately someday she would like to be a nurse). Luckily today our ems Lt. was able to be present who also is a nurse so they hit it off well alot of questions were answered.
At the end she said I can do the befo stuff just have to put my mind to it. Thank you Riley for choosing our company to learn more about the fire service.
Thank you Chief Gurnett , Asst Chief/ President Tobin and ems Lt. Spark for taking time out of your day to show and talk to Riley about the fire service.

Today the majority of our active members spent their day doing our yearly refresher training on many different topics including
General Hazard Recognition. We are thankful to Rehwaldt Builders for allowing us to look at different stages of a home(s) being built in the Deerview subdivision.
We spent time going over most of our plans including: Hazcom, respiratory protection, sexual and work place violence , blood borne pathogen and made sure our 100 Club forms and insurance forms are all up to date.
We spent time on responding and returning from calls. Including what our response modes should be etc .. Fire scene safety was another topic with Asst Chief Bedford going over radio procedures and mayday or mandown procedures. Hazmat Tech Homesberger gave us an overview of the NRG books.
We went over our SCBA's and turnout gear/PPE. With proper cleaning of airpaks and gear to remove the cancer causing carcinogens. We also read on how cancer can effect our personal from an article that one of our own members had written for the National Volunteer Fire Council that was published nationally, regarding her personal cancer journey with a real informative letter. We closed out the day going over the tools on all of our equipment the uses for them and safety features of each tool.
As Chief of the department I thank our entire membership for spending well over 9 hours today alone on keeping their skills fresh and continue to serve their community and beyond.
Chief Gurnett
