History of the Library

The Library was founded by the Akron Bar Association in 1888. The members expanded the library by selling stock or exchanging stock for private law collections. The library originally occupied the second floor of the newly built 1906 courthouse, but the library quickly outgrew this space and was moved to the fourth floor in 1917. The library temporarily moved to the Ohio Building in 1985 during the remodeling of the courthouse. In 1988 the library was relocated back to the fourth floor of the courthouse, which is its current location.
