On Saturday, I was included with two other judges and one justice from other states to judge the Region XI Dr. Martin Luther King Drum Major for Justice Advocacy Competition — an annual oral and written advocacy program sponsored by the National Bar Association and the National Bar Institute. Thank you to Montrella Jackson and the other members for the exciting opportunity! Seeing what our youth can do and encouraging them in their endeavors is definitely worth sacrificing time on a Saturday morning! Congratulations to the winner, Camille Cartwright!

💚 We’re still wearing green for Mental Health Awareness month!! Today we were able to celebrate with Judge Williams in recognition of 25 years of Akron Municipal Court’s Mental Health Court, over which she presides. Judge Williams has led the way on these efforts and changed the lives of so many. Thank you, Judge Williams, for setting the bar so high and helping to end the stigma regarding mental health. Pictured here with Judge Williams, Judge Lisa Coates who presides over Stow Municipal Court’s Mental Health Court, and Jamie Messenger of NAMI Summit County.

Today I welcomed The University of Akron School of Law’s PREP program to my courtroom. What a great group of over-achievers. They had so many questions! I love meeting and encouraging the next generation of lawyers. Thank you to Alisa Benedict O’Brien, Anthony Colucci, and Akron Law for coordinating this. ⚖️

💚 May is Mental Health Awareness Month. I had the opportunity to attend NAMI Summit County’s 40th anniversary luncheon. Hearing the story of Kody Green was so impactful. I love when people overcome the odds and do what others thought was never possible. What a game changer! Thank you Jamie Messenger and NAMI Summit County for all you do!!

Yesterday’s MayDay for Mental Health Su***de Prevention Symposium was nothing short of amazing. The material covered the importance of discussions such as this in our community. Thank you to Jamie Messenger and Aimee Rena' Wade for being my partners in this project. Our Committee was phenomenal and knocked it out the park. Thank you also to the incredible Dr. Ciara Dennis-Morgan whose message was much needed, and the incredible panel of experts did their thing!! And to Marvin Montgomery Jr., you rock! Thank you also to all of our sponsors and providers, and Latonya L Johnson and Lisa Dean for volunteering to literally run around the room. It was a good day, which brought hope for such a difficult topic. One conversation can make all the difference.

We will address su***de prevention and help raise awareness, including key identifiers, and support available. This is vital for youth, parents, athletes, coaches, adults, and their support systems in our community. Because one conversation can make all the difference.

💚 WEAR GREEN on Friday, May 1. “Wearing green is a simple but powerful way to show support for mental wellness and to remind our community that Support Is Here in Summit County. Green is the national color of mental health awareness, and your participation helps increase visibility, reduce stigma, and spread the word about vital resources like the 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline.” - County of Summit ADM Board

One conversation can make all the difference.

We’re human. Sometimes we need support. Sometimes the people we love need support. Sometimes our friends and favorite people struggle. Sometimes people wonder whether they matter to anyone. Of course they matter! In a world that can be so cruel, mean, and lonely at times, EVERYONE matters. Want to know the signs? Want to know how to listen? Want to seek help? Want to help prevent su***de? This symposium is for you! This is a community effort. Let’s stop the silence - Because one conversation can make all the difference!

Today is the last day of Black history month. Yesterday we had a wonderful heart-felt program at the courthouse. Black History Month is important to see where we came from and where we’re going. It’s about inclusion and not exclusion. People died to have equal opportunities, and some died because equal opportunities did not exist. Thank you to the amazing panel! Professor Brant T. Lee put it all in perspective when he explained how disparities occur not because of overt racism but inequities in the system. Prof. Lee, Clerk Tavia Galonski, Attorney and Akron HR Director Montrella Jackson, and Magistrate Job Esau Perry offered real life experiences with inequities and candid optimism about the future. What a great way to cap off the month! Thank you to Summit County Probate Court for co-hosting!
