At approximately 2:42 PM today, Agawam Firefighters were dispatched to Juniper Ridge Drive for a reported residential structure fire. With initial dispatch reports of heavy fire and a possible trapped occupant, a second alarm was requested while units were enroute.

Upon arrival, crews encountered a home heavily involved in fire, with neighbors reporting that an occupant may still be inside. Firefighters made entry into the residence without the protection of hose lines and successfully rescued an elderly male occupant.

Extensive fire suppression operations were required, and the fire was brought under control in approximately 30 minutes. Agawam Firefighters were assisted by the Springfield Fire Department, Westfield Fire Department, Southwick Fire Department, Longmeadow Fire Department, and National Ambulance.

There were no civilian injuries reported. One firefighter was transported to the hospital and is currently in stable condition. The residence sustained significant fire damage and is considered a total loss.

The Agawam Fire Department is grateful for the support of our mutual aid partners. Our thoughts are with the family affected by this devastating loss.

The cause of the fire is being investigated by the Agawam Fire Department, Agawam Police Department, and Massachusetts State Police Troopers assigned to the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services. (AS 03/31/26 2111)

On 2/17/2026 @ 1553 hours, Westcomm Regional Dispatch began receiving calls for a garage Fire at 78 Williams Street. An off-duty Agawam firefighter, returning from the Massachusetts Fire Academy Recruit Academy, was driving by and assisted the resident and a guest out of the home before the fire extended into the main part of the home.

Longmeadow Fire crews arrived within minutes to find heavy fire in the garage, extending into the home. Crews made a coordinated interior attack and exterior attack on the garage and were able to keep the fire contained to the kitchen area and garage.

Mutual aid from Agawam Fire, East Longmeadow Fire, North Thompsonville Fire, Shaker Pines Fire and Chapin Ambulance were brought in to assist at the fire and provide fire protection and medical services to the community.

The fire was brought under control within 45 minutes. The fire is still under investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Longmeadow Fire Department, though does not appear to be suspicious in nature.

With the recent large amount of snow that’s impacted our area, please take a few minutes to clear fire hydrants near your home. Hydrants should be cleared 3 feet around and to the street so crews can access them quickly in an emergency. A few minutes of your time can make a life-saving difference. Thank you for helping keep our community safe!

At approximately 1238 on 12/8/2025, Agawam Fire Department personnel were dispatched to Adams St for a possible chimney fire. On arrival, smoke was noted coming from the eaves and gable vents of the house. Crews made an aggressive interior attack and contained the fire to a portion of the attic. The fire is under investigation by the Agawam Fire Department Inspector and Troopers from the State Fire Marshall’s Office.

The Agawam Fire Department would like to remind those who use wood during the heating season to ensure your chimney is cleaned and inspected at least annually, as well as to use only seasoned hard wood as fuel.

Great job by everyone!!

Small Garage Fire Quickly Contained on Marlene Drive

At approximately 4:18 a.m. on November 19th, the Agawam Fire Department responded to Marlene Drive for a report of smoke in a residential garage. Police units arriving first located several small, smoldering fires in the garage and used extinguishers to contain them until fire crews arrived. Firefighters conducted a full extinguishment, removed debris, and verified that no additional hot spots remained. No injuries were reported.

The fire originated in the garage where the homeowner had been charging a homemade lithium-ion battery module. The resident was awakened by smoke alarms and the sound of exploding batteries. Attempts were made by occupants to control the fire before emergency responders arrived.

“This incident is a reminder that lithium-ion batteries are typically safe when used as designed, but extremely hazardous when they’re modified, repurposed, or built at home,” said Fire Chief Alan Sirois. “When these batteries are tampered with, damaged, or charged improperly, they can fail violently with little warning."

Off-the-shelf lithium-ion batteries from reputable manufacturers are typically safe when used in the correct devices and charged with manufacturer recommended equipment. Lithium-ion batteries are used every day in laptops, smartphones, tools, toys, vehicles, and countless other devices without incident.

Lithium-ion batteries should never be disassembled, rebuilt, or altered. Charging systems must match the battery chemistry and be equipped with proper safety protections. The Fire Department urges residents to:

• Only use UL-listed, factory-built lithium-ion batteries and chargers
• Avoid purchasing or building homemade or modified battery packs
• Purchase replacement batteries for devices from device manufacturer recommended sources
• Charge batteries on non-combustible surfaces away from sleeping areas
• Immediately and appropriately discard damaged, swollen, or overheating batteries

For more information about the proper disposal of lithium-ion batteries, Agawam residents can visit https://agawam.ma.us/613/How-to-Dispose-of-Batteries

Working smoke alarms helped provide early warning in this incident and prevented a more serious outcome. The Agawam Fire Department recommends that residential smoke detectors are checked regularly as they provide the greatest chance of early warning and safe escape from a fire.
