Yesterday, we welcomed 40 students from Forest Park Middle School to the Springfield Regional Wastewater Treatment Facility on Bondi’s Island for an educational tour on wastewater treatment, environmental stewardship, and careers in water.
Students learned about the wastewater treatment process and the important role the community plays in protecting our system by keeping wipes out of pipes and putting fats, oils, and grease (FOG) in the trash instead of down the drain.
One of the highlights was a hands-on demonstration showing the difference between toilet paper and wipes. Students observed how toilet paper breaks down in water, while wipes do not.
Before leaving, students also received our new household tips brochures filled with simple ways they can help protect their pipes and prevent sewer backups at their home.
Thank you to Forest Park Middle School for visiting and learning more about the important work happening behind the scenes every day to protect public health and the environment!
