Summer in Michigan has a personality all its own. One minute it’s sunshine and backyard burgers. The next? The sky turns greenish-gray, the wind starts doing gymnastics with your patio furniture, and suddenly everyone is asking, “Did anyone charge the flashlight?”

June is a great time to think about emergency preparedness, not because we want families to feel afraid, but because being prepared helps us feel calmer, safer, and more in control when unexpected situations happen. At the Lenawee County Health Department, we believe preparedness isn’t about panic. It’s about peace of mind.

As summer approaches, the Michigan Departments of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) are reminding Michigan residents living near or visiting area waters to keep an eye out for harmful algal blooms (HABs).

HABs form due to a rapid growth of cyanobacteria, also called blue-green algae, which are naturally found in lakes, rivers and ponds. Unfortunately, some cyanobacteria have toxins (cyanotoxins) that can be found in blooms and be harmful to people and animals. They often look like blue-green, yellow or brown streaks, foam or thick paint-like scums on the water surface.

To help Michigan residents alert the state about suspected HABs, EGLE has updated its online reporting form to include harmful algal bloom reports. The public will now be able to report suspected HABs by filling out the form at Michigan.gov/HABs. Individuals reporting a potential HAB are requested to provide details and upload photos of what they see in the water.

It only takes two minutes for a car to reach unsafe temperatures. Every year children and pets left in parked vehicles die from heat stroke.

• Never leave a child, a person with a disability or a pet in your car, even if the windows are open. • Even the most caring and watchful person can forget a child or pet is in the vehicle. Always check to make sure all children and pets are out of the car before locking it and walking away.
• Teach children that cars are not safe places to play. Store your keys out of reach of children.
• Leave pets at home when you can.

☀️ Tomorrow is Don’t Fry Day!

Before you head into the holiday weekend, take a minute to plan for sun safety. Whether you’re firing up the grill, heading to the ball field, or relaxing by the water, protect your skin like it’s part of the outfit: sunscreen (SPF 30+), a hat, sunglasses, and a little shade go a long way.

Thanks to the National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention, this day is a reminder that preventing skin cancer can be as simple as building smart habits in the sun.

Enjoy the sunshine tomorrow… just don’t fry! 🌞🧴
