A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect Friday from 5 AM to 4 PM as freezing rain is expected to impact the area. Widespread ice accumulations of a tenth to two tenths of an inch are expected, although locally higher amounts are possible. Be prepared for slippery conditions for both driving and walking, as well as scattered power outages especially if ice accumulations approach a quarter inch.

Crash Responder Safety Week is a reminder that the people protecting you on the roadside need protection too. Each of these patrol vehicles was hit while our troopers were helping other motorists. These crashes were preventable.

Michigan’s law is simple: slow down and move over when approaching any emergency or service vehicle with lights activated. Move into an open lane if you can. If you can’t, slow at least 10 mph below the speed limit and pass with caution, giving responders as much space as possible.

Congratulations Chief Ossmann!

Over the last week, the Adrian Police Department has responded to an increased number of complaints in which property was stolen from unlocked vehicles at apartment complexes. The majority of larcenies from vehicles are crimes of opportunity that do not target specific individuals. Criminals target locations where large numbers of vehicles are parked and search until they find those that are unlocked. Common locations where criminals search for unlocked vehicles include apartment complexes, college dorms, and stores. The Adrian Police Department would like to offer the following prevention tips to combat these crimes of opportunity:

• Never leave your car running or the keys in the ignition when you're away from it – even for "just a minute."

• Always roll up the windows and lock the car – even if it's in front of your home.

• When possible, park in a busy, well-lighted area.

• Never leave valuables in plain view – even if your car is locked. Put them in the trunk or out of sight.

• Don't leave personal identification documents or credit cards in your vehicle.

• Install a vehicle immobilizer system (smart keys, kill switches, wireless ignition authentication, etc.)

• Install an audible alarm system and/or tracking system.

If you discover your vehicle has been targeted, please call 9-1-1 immediately so an Officer can investigate. Even if you believe nothing can be done, your vehicle may be one of many that were targeted the same day. Each individual larceny scene may possess different amounts of evidence or surveillance, and another victim’s case may prove to solve your own. Please contact the Adrian Police Department if you have any questions about this information or wish to request extra patrol. If you see anything suspicious, please call 9-1-1 so an Officer can be dispatched.
