Scam of the Week: This Charge Doesn’t Add Up

Imagine you’re browsing online when a full-screen alert suddenly takes over your browser. It may display an Apple or Amazon logo, a red warning symbol, and a scary message claiming your account was used for a large purchase.

The alert urges you to call a “support” number immediately and may block the rest of the page so it’s the only thing you can click.

Don’t call it. This is a common scam.

The number connects you to a cybercriminal pretending to be customer support. They may ask you to “verify” your account by sharing personal or banking information, or pressure you to pay a fake fee to reverse the charge.

Stay safe
Never call a phone number shown in an unexpected pop-up or browser alert.

Go directly to the company’s official website or app to find its legitimate support contact information.

If the alert claims there was a charge, sign in to your bank or credit-card account directly and review recent transactions.

Pause before reacting scammers rely on fear and urgency to get you to act quickly.

When in doubt, close the alert and verify the claim through official channels. Stop. Think. Verify.

The Addison Police and Fire Department is excited to welcome George H.W. Bush Elementary students, families, teachers, and staff back for a new school year!

We are especially proud to work with the Addison Fire Department in supporting local students. Together, our departments were able to provide school supplies for 24 students in need—three students from each grade level. We hope these supplies help every recipient start the school year feeling prepared, supported, and ready to succeed.

As the school year begins, please remember that school zones are active again. Drivers should slow down, eliminate distractions, watch carefully for students walking and biking, follow crossing-guard directions, and obey all posted school-zone signs. Please never pass a school bus when its red lights are flashing and stop arm is extended.

First-Day Social Media Safety
As families celebrate the first day of school, we encourage everyone to share safely online.

Do:

Share positive first-day memories and encouraging messages.

Check photos for private details before posting.

Ask permission before posting photos that include other students.

Keep personal information, schedules, classroom numbers, and bus-stop details private.

Don’t:

Post student IDs, addresses, phone numbers, or other identifying information.

Share real-time locations or daily pickup and drop-off routines publicly.

Post photos of children outside your family without parent or guardian permission.

Let social media distract you while driving in or near a school zone.

This week, Addison Police Department officers sharpened their Defensive Tactics and Fi****ms skills through hands-on training designed to keep both our team and our community safe. Every hour in training means better preparedness, calmer decisions, and stronger protection for the people we serve.

Take a look at our July infographic for a snapshot of how our department served and supported the community throughout the month. During July, officers conducted 1,168 traffic stops, responded to 20 crashes and handled 1,540 calls for service. We also made 91 arrests and opened 235 cases, including 38 property crimes, 10 financial and fraud crimes, and 45 crimes against persons.

On May 16, 2026, around 1:41 a.m., Officers Dunn and Allen responded to a call about an unresponsive woman. When they arrived, she was on the ground making gurgling sounds and soon lost her pulse. The officers immediately began CPR and continued life-saving efforts as her condition went in and out.

She briefly started breathing and vomiting, but lost her pulse again multiple times. Thanks to the quick actions of Officers Dunn and Allen, she was kept alive until medical help arrived. Medics were able to stabilize her and transport her to the hospital.

Chief Freis recognized the officers efforts at the most recent council meeting. Fantastic work, gentleman!
