PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of
the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and
pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any
circumstances.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When
possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or
evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat
stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible
and drink plenty of water.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and
Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in
shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat
should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an
emergency! Call 9 1 1.

LUNAR ECLIPSE THIS WEEK: The next lunar eclipse visible from Alabama will be a very deep partial lunar eclipse on the night of Thursday, August 27, into early Friday, August 28.

This is an unusually impressive partial eclipse. At maximum, about 96% of the Moon’s disk will be inside Earth’s dark central shadow (umbra). It won’t technically be a total lunar eclipse, but visually it may come close to resembling one, with much of the Moon potentially taking on a coppery-red or reddish-orange color.

Around maximum at 11:12p CT, the Moon will be roughly 40–42 degrees above the southern horizon. That means you won’t need a perfectly unobstructed horizon—just a reasonably open view of the sky.

The key viewing window: If you don’t want to stay up for the entire event, I’d suggest watching from about 10:15 until 11:45p CT. The most dramatic appearance should occur around the maximum at 11:12p CT.

And the good news: no special glasses are needed for a lunar eclipse. It is completely safe to watch with the naked eye. Binoculars or a telescope can make the changing colors and the edge of Earth’s shadow even more impressive.
