When a major party of the United States becomes dominated by people who hold radical anti-American ideas, it ceases to be “the loyal opposition” that is so important to the functioning of our democracy. Instead it becomes a threat and political violence ensues. Never has this been more obvious than it has in the last two years. We are now up to three attempts to assassinate President Trump and many more acts of violence against our public officials. Even in the late 1960s-early1970s when our country was seriously divided over the Vietnam War, it wasn’t this bad. We are now inching closer to a pre-Civil War political climate. Why? Because civil debate has been replaced by inflammatory rhetoric. Because, as it has been throughout human history, there are some people who become so passionate about their own beliefs and the ideas of people that they think validate them that they are willing to resort to violence. They delude themselves into thinking that their violent actions, up to and including murder, are going to change the world for the better. Instead they end up just causing tragedy for their victims and throwing away their own lives either literally or figuratively. The rest of us can’t live in fear, but we can resolve to weigh our words carefully.
