Acushnet OEM — Flash Flood Warning

The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Warning for our area, including Acushnet, until 2:00pm today (Sunday, September 13).

Heavy rain is ongoing. About 1 to 1.5 inches has already fallen in parts of the warned area, with rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour possible. Additional rainfall of 1 to 3 inches is possible. Flash flooding of streets, underpasses, and poor-drainage areas is ongoing or expected shortly.

Please:
• Turn Around, Don’t Drown — never drive through flooded roads
• Avoid walking through flowing water
• Move to higher ground if flooding threatens your area
• Check on neighbors who may need help

The broader Flood Watch remains in effect through 6:00pm.

The Flood Watch remains in effect for our area through 6:00pm today (Sunday, September 13).

Showers and thunderstorms continue, with heavy rain possible. The National Weather Service now says rainfall amounts of 2 to 3 inches are possible locally, and narrow bands of heavier rain could bring a flash-flood threat in poor-drainage areas.

Please:
• Avoid flooded roads and standing water — Turn Around, Don’t Drown
• Never drive through water of unknown depth
• Clear storm drains near your home if it’s safe to do so
• Check on neighbors who may need a hand

🚫 NO PARKING NOTICE 🚫

Please be advised that there will be NO PARKING and NO STOPPING on the northbound side of Main Street from the Acushnet Town Hall to just past Lake Street until further notice.

There will be select portions of Main Street which will have NO PARKING and NO STOPPING on both the northbound and southbound sides.

This restriction is in place to ensure public safety and allow for proper traffic flow in the area. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding.

📍 Affected Area: Main Street (from Town Hall to past Lake Street)
🚗 Parking Restriction: No Parking, Effective Immediately

Acushnet OEM — National Preparedness Month

Last week: build a kit. This week: make a family emergency plan.

Your household may not be together when something happens — a storm, a power outage, or another emergency. A simple plan helps everyone know how to reconnect and stay safe.

Sit down together and answer:
1. How will we get alerts and warnings?
2. Where will we shelter — at home or somewhere else?
3. What’s our evacuation route if we need to leave?
4. How will we reach each other if we’re separated? (Text often works when calls don’t.)
5. Who checks on neighbors, pets, or anyone who needs extra help?

🎒🚌 TOMORROW’S THE BIG DAY!!!
BACK TO SCHOOL — ACUSHNET! 🚌🎒

Tomorrow begins a new school year for the Acushnet Public Schools. The Acushnet Police Department would like to wish all students, parents, teachers, and staff of Acushnet Public Schools a safe and successful school year!

As students head back to the classroom, please remember that school is back in session, and our roads will be busier than usual. Give yourself extra time, slow down, and watch carefully for children walking, biking, and getting on and off school buses.

🚌 SCHOOL BUS SAFETY — KNOW THE RULES

🚨 STOP for a school bus when the red lights are flashing and the stop sign is extended. This applies to traffic approaching from both directions on a road where the bus is stopped.

❌ Never pass a stopped school bus. A few seconds saved are never worth putting a child’s life at risk.

👀 Watch for children near bus stops. Children may cross the road unexpectedly or move quickly into traffic.

📵 Stay focused. Put the phone down and eliminate distractions, especially in school zones and around buses.

🐢 Slow down and be patient. School buses make frequent stops, and students may be entering or exiting the roadway.

Remember: The flashing red lights mean STOP — not “slow down and pass.”

September is National Preparedness Month. This week: build a kit.

A storm or a long power outage can close stores and pharmacies for days. FEMA recommends a household kit you can live off for several days.

Start with:
• Water. One gallon per person per day, for several days. Don't forget pets.
• Non-perishable food and a manual can opener
• Flashlight, extra batteries, and a battery or hand-crank radio
• First aid kit and a few extra days of prescription meds
• Copies of IDs and important papers in a waterproof bag
• Phone charger and a backup battery

Keep it in a bin or duffel everyone in the house can find. Check expiration dates once a year.
