Wednesday, May 27, 2026 — Governor Charles Riley and Brian Vallo, Chairman of the Chaco Heritage Tribal Association, took part in a discussion on Native America Calling about the conflicts between oil drilling vs. cultural preservation at Chaco Canyon.

The Trump administration is moving to lift a 20-year ban on oil and gas drilling near Chaco Canyon, a site of great cultural importance to pueblos in the Southwest. There is potential for new oil leases on nearly 340,000 acres of public land around the Greater Chaco Canyon area. Currently, the site is on the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s list of America’s Most Endangered Spaces. It is the second time on this list. Chaco is already designated as a protected National Historic Park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
