Ackerman was named for the president of the railroad, William K. Ackerman has been the County Seat of Choctaw since 1896.

On September 9, our local first responders and emergency agencies will come together for a Community Disaster Scenario to test their response and make sure weโ€™re prepared when our community needs us most.

This year, Jack Oโ€™ Lantern Jam will be back around the Courthouse, taking place on Harmon Circle and portions of E. Quinn Street. ๐ŸŽƒ๐Ÿฌ

โš ๏ธ IMPORTANT SAFETY UPDATE โ€” HWY 12 & HWY 9

The intersection of Highway 12 and Highway 9 has become a serious safety concern. We have had far too many close calls involving vehicles failing to stop at the stop sign on Highway 12. Tragically, a motorcyclist lost his life at this intersection just a couple of weeks ago, and there have been several other close calls since.

I recently spoke with MDOT about the intersection and was glad to learn that they were already aware of the safety concerns and had improvements ordered and in the works!

MDOT will be installing rumble strips and flashing stop signs at the intersection, with the work expected to be completed within approximately 3โ€“4 weeks.

I want to sincerely thank MDOT for taking this safety concern seriously and for already taking action to make this intersection safer. We appreciate their quick response and commitment to improving the area.

Until the improvements are in place, please use extra caution when approaching this intersection. Slow down, watch for traffic, and STOP at the stop sign. Please don't assume the other vehicle is going to stop.

We can't undo what has already happened, but hopefully these additional safety measures will help prevent another tragedy.

The Town of Ackerman is looking for a dependable, hardworking person to join our Public Works Department.

This is a hands-on position working closely with the Public Works Director and assisting with a variety of daily public works operations, with a strong focus on water system work and equipment operation.

Responsibilities may include:
โ€ข Assisting with water system maintenance and repairs
โ€ข Reading and working with water meters
โ€ข Assisting with water line repairs and maintenance
โ€ข Operating heavy equipment and other equipment
โ€ข Street, drainage, ditch, and right-of-way maintenance
โ€ข Grounds and town property maintenance
โ€ข Loading, hauling, digging, grading, and other general public works duties
โ€ข Assisting with various projects and other duties as needed

Weโ€™re looking for someone who is reliable, hardworking, willing to learn, and takes pride in helping keep our town running properly.

Experience with water systems, heavy equipment, public works, construction, or related work is a plus.

This position requires the ability to work outdoors, perform physical labor, and operate equipment safely.
