Today, we received a thoughtful visit from First Christian Church, Abingdon, VA. They brought our officers some snacks and treats in remembrance of the anniversary of September 11, 2001.

Members of the Abingdon Police Department joined fellow first responders, Town of Abingdon employees, and community members today at the Abingdon Fire Department for a 9/11 remembrance ceremony.

As we marked the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, we paused to remember the lives lost, honor the courage and sacrifice of those who responded, and recognize the lasting impact that day had on our nation and communities.

We are grateful for the sacrifices made by so many and thankful for the opportunity to come together with our community in remembrance. We will never forget.

The Abingdon Police Department's administrative offices will be closed Monday, September 7, 2026, in observance of Labor Day. Offices will reopen on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, at 8:30 AM.

🎓Congratulations, graduates!🎓

The Abingdon Police Department joined law enforcement agencies from across the region yesterday for the Southwest Virginia Criminal Justice Training Academy’s Law Enforcement Basic School graduation ceremony.

We’re proud to congratulate two of our own, Officer Crosswhite and Officer Nichols, on this accomplishment! We also celebrate Officer Nichols on receiving the Michael Chandler Leadership Award, recognizing his leadership and dedication.

🚧 TRAFFIC ADVISORY — MAIN STREET CLOSURE

Drivers should plan for a temporary closure of Main Street between Cummings Street and Court Street on Saturday, September 5, for the Abingdon Soap Box Derby.

⏰ Closure: 8:00 a.m. – approximately 2:00 p.m.
🚗 Detours: In place during the closure
➡️ Valley Street and Plumb Alley: Remain open
🅿️ No parking: Main Street closure area

Please plan an alternate route, allow extra travel time, and use caution around the event area.

Traffic Advisory - Main Street Closure

Get ready for the Abingdon Soap Box Derby!

Main Street will be closed, between Cummings Street and Court Street, on Saturday, September 5, 2026, for this exciting community event.

This section of Main Street will close at 8:00am so that event set up can begin. The road will re-open at approximately 2:00pm, after all the runs have been completed. Valley Street and Plumb Alley will remain open and detours will be in place. There will be no parking on this section of Main Street during the event.

We appreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation as we cheer on the racers and enjoy this fun Abingdon event. Come out, bring the family, and watch the action!
