🐝 State Pollinator: The Western Honeybee! Did you know? In 2015, the Western honeybee (Apis mellifera) was officially named the State Pollinator of Texas!

These buzzing heroes play a huge role in our state's agriculture, pollinating crops like cotton, melons, and peaches—and supporting wild ecosystems across the Lone Star State.

Beyond their ecological impact, honeybees are also a symbol of hard work, community, and sustainability. Their designation helps raise awareness about pollinator conservation and the importance of protecting their habitats.

🌻 Fun Fact: Texas also honors the monarch butterfly as its state insect—but the honeybee earned its own spotlight for its vital pollination work!

Abilene Rewind: This photo captures a moment in motion at the Texas & Pacific Railroad Station during the 1950s—travelers with their luggage in tow, preparing to board a train and head off to destinations unknown. 🧳✨

A helpful clue to the photo’s era appears just to the right: a sign reading Hotel Drake, the name given to the former Hotel Grace beginning in 1946. The hotel would remain a downtown fixture until it closed in 1973.

Train travel once played a central role in Abilene life, with the T&P Station serving as a major hub for passengers and commerce. That began to change after the last passenger train departed in 1967, as travel by rail declined and downtown hotels like the Hotel Drake became less essential than they once were.

Photos like this freeze a fleeting moment—when Abilene was still a city of arrivals and departures, and the railroad helped connect West Texas to the wider world.

📸 Do you remember taking a train trip from Abilene? We’d love to hear your stories.
