It’s spooky season! 👻 You know what that means…It’s time for the 5th annual Taylor County First Responder Trunk-or-Treat. Come see your very own Potosi Volunteer Fire Department along with other Taylor County first responders for a spooktacular night. We’ll have food/beverage trucks, inflatable slide, spooky static displays, a fire and safety booth, and more!

As we head into fall and the season of giving, we are asking for canned food donations to go towards Operation Stuffed Turkey. Each year Taylor County EMS prepares warm meals and ready to cook meals for Taylor County individuals and families in need. Help us help these families that might not otherwise receive a delicious Thanksgiving meal.

So set the date…Saturday, October 24th at Old Settlers Reunion Grounds in Buffalo Gap from 5:00-8:00pm. We can’t wait to see you there!

🇺🇸 25 YEARS — WE WILL NEVER FORGET 🇺🇸

Twenty-five years ago today, our nation was forever changed.

On September 11, 2001, 2,977 innocent lives were lost. Among them were 343 FDNY firefighters, along with law enforcement officers, EMS personnel, military members, and ordinary citizens who demonstrated extraordinary courage in the face of unimaginable tragedy.

For those of us in the fire service, September 11th carries a special weight. We remember the firefighters who climbed those stairs while others were coming down. They knew the danger, yet continued upward because someone needed them.
Twenty-five years later, their courage, sacrifice, and devotion to others continue to represent the very best of the fire service.

We pause to remember every life lost, every family forever changed, every first responder who answered the call, and all those who continue to suffer from illnesses related to their service at Ground Zero.

May we also remember the unity that followed—that despite our differences, we stood together as Americans.

Today, we had a group of our volunteers participate in Abilene Fire Department’s 9/11 memorial stair climb commemorating each and every soul that perished that fateful day. 25 years later, we still remember. We still honor. We will never forget.

On Wednesday evening, September 9th at 11:03pm, Potosi Volunteer Fire Department was toned out for a vehicle fire involving 2 vehicles that shortly after escalated to a structure fire. Upon arrival of incoming units, it was discovered to be a detached guest house with attached garage as well as utility and tree involvement. With a quick attack, we were able to bring the fire under control without further extension. Lacking hydrants in the immediate area, our mutual aid arrived to help us establish a water source by shuttling water from their truck to ours throughout the incident. The structure and vehicles were a total loss and no injuries were reported.

A big thank you to our mutual aid departments, Jim Ned Volunteer Fire Department, Buffalo Gap Volunteer Fire Department, Taylor County EMS, and Taylor County Sheriff's Office for the assistance in helping us help our neighbors when they needed it most.

Today our hearts are heavy as we carry the grief of losing Taylor County Sheriff’s Deputy Bobby Votaw.

In our line of work, the people we meet on calls become more than just a uniform. They become familiar faces, confidants, and if you are truly lucky…friends. We are grateful for every call, every conversation, every memory, and especially every dimpled smile and laugh. His service to Taylor County made a difference, but so did the person behind the badge.

Our hearts are with Bobby’s family, friends, and our brothers and sisters at the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office as they face a loss that words simply cannot make easier.

Taylor County lost one of its own and tonight there is an empty place in our first responder family. Rest easy, Bobby. Thank you for your dedicated service. Thank you for the memories. And especially thank you for the friendship.

When people think “volunteer firefighter,” they usually picture fire trucks 🚒, hoses 💦, and structure fires 🔥. Sometimes it means climbing to the top of a repeater tower to replace an antenna. 😳

A few of our Potosi VFD members took the scenic route to work today ⬆️straight up⬆️ helping switch out an antenna that keeps communications working when we need them most.

At Potosi VFD, volunteering isn’t just about fighting fire. You’ll learn new skills, tackle some pretty unique challenges, work alongside a great crew, and occasionally find yourself looking down thinking, “How exactly did I end up up here?” 😂

We would be remiss if we let the day pass and not wish our very own Asst. Fire Chief, Ben Callis a very HaPpY BiRtHdAy! You know you’re getting older when your back goes out more often than you do, your knees have more complaints than your coworkers, and “a wild night” means staying up past 10 PM. He’s the kind of guy you can count on when there’s work to be done… because apparently he has never met a job he couldn’t turn into a full-time project. 🤣 Wishing you a relaxing day and best wishes for the next trip around the sun ☀️
