Our thoughts are with Deputy Votaw’s family, loved ones, and his fellow deputies.

Deputy Votaw was beloved by his community and the impact he made is palpable. His service, sacrifice, and legacy will not be forgotten.

It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Deputy Sheriff Bobby Votaw.
Deputy Votaw dedicated himself to the service of the community. His passing is a tremendous loss to his family, friends, fellow deputies and to the law-enforcement community.
May his service be remembered, his sacrifice honored, and his legacy never forgotten.
May your thoughts and prayers be with his family and friends during this difficult time.

📣Employee Milestones📣

We’re not done with August highlights yet! Thanks to Paramedic Gus’ and AEMT Amber’s eagle eyes, they discovered we had more milestones to celebrate. And this spotlight is special, as every single employee is celebrating their 1 Year of Service together!

-Amber-
Amber is an Advanced EMT who hit her milestone in August. She was a Basic EMT for three years, and has been an Advanced EMT for four years. Amber is currently in paramedic school.

-Brian-
Brian is an EMT Basic who hit his milestone in August. He has been a part of GMR/AMR since 2017 in Johnson County, Texas. Brian relocated to Abilene and has been with MetroCare for a year.

-Joel-
Joel is one of our Transport Coordinators. He reached his one year milestone in August. Joel is originally from San Antonio. He began his career in the fire service in 2024 at the Penitas Fire Department, where he fell in love with the EMS side of the career and instantly knew that’s where he wanted to be. Joel says he made the move to the Abilene area to engage in an amazing career as a Transport Coordinator for MetroCare and to continue pursuing his dreams. He is currently in EMT Basic school and is set to complete it very soon. Joel is also a Volunteer Firefighter for the town of Haskell, where he lives with his beautiful wife and three daughters. He credits his family as being the motivation to chase his dreams.

-Reid-
Reid is an EMT Basic who reached his milestone in August. He’s a Big Spring Firefighter and helps teach at the Cisco Fire Academy. Reid’s twin brother is Ryder, and in his free time you can find him golfing or at the gym.

-Ryder-
Ryder is an EMT Basic who reached his milestone in September. He wanted to be featured with his twin brother, and who were we to say no? Ryder is a Big Spring Firefighter and helps teach at the Cisco Fire Academy. His identical twin brother is Reid, and in his free time you can catch him golfing.

We are incredibly thankful for these employees and their involvement not just locally, but in the surrounding areas. Our organization is bettered and molded by the people who respond to emergencies with confidence and lead their patient care with compassion.

📣Years of Service Milestones📣

Our organization is made stronger by the people who choose to serve their community day and night. We’re honored to present five employees who have reached a Years of Service milestone this month.

This month’s milestone achievers are Zacory, Rachel, Zach, Felix, and Janet!

-Zacory-
Zacory is a Paramedic who has reached his 3 Years of Service milestone. He has worked at MetroCare for a total of 8 years.

-Rachel-
Rachel is an EMT Basic who has reached her 3 Years of Service milestone.

-Zach-
Zach is a Paramedic who has reached his 9 Years of Service milestone. He completed Paramedic school in 2017 in California and did his clinical leads with MetroCare. Zach says he fell in love with the MetroCare family while here and planted his roots in Abilene over the last 10 Years. He has been with the Abilene Fire Department for the last 2.5 years. Zach has a wife of 5 years and two sons, aged 3 and 6 months.

-Felix-
Felix is a Paramedic who has reached his 13 Years of Service milestone.

-Janet-
Janet is an Advanced EMT who has reached her 17 Years of Service milestone. She has served as our Operations Manager for the last four years.

We’re continually grateful for our employees and their consistent dedication to emergency medicine and serving their community.

📓Back To School📓

It’s back to school time, so remember safe driving habits in all school zones and when near buses.

For School Zones:

🛑Stop completely at all stop signs and cross walks.

🗺️If you’re a daily commuter and not dropping off/picking up a child, consider an alternative route.

For Dropping Off:

🅿️ Don’t double park; it blocks visibility for other children and vehicles.

Sharing The Road with School Busses:

🚨It is illegal in all 50 states to pass a school bus that is stopped to load or unload children. If the yellow or red lights are flashing and the arm is extended, traffic must stop from either direction if you are an undivided road (without a physical median).

Let’s help make this school year a safe one!

Registration is now open! We hope to see you there!

Abilene Fire Department, Abilene Police Department, Metro Care, and Dyess AFB are proud to host a Memorial Ceremony and Stair Climb in honor of the 25th Anniversary of 9/11.

Registration is now open. In commemoration of the 343 FDNY members who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, each stair climb participant will climb 2,200 steps, the equivalent of the 110 stories that were the height of each World Trade Center building.

Join us on the morning of Friday, September 11, for a memorial ceremony beginning at 9 AM.

The stair climb will begin afterward. You may register through this link https://bit.ly/4cLmnnX , by using the QR code, or on-site the day of the event, beginning at 8 AM. The cost is $20, payable at the event. Waivers will be filled out on-site. The first 200 registrants will receive a free event T-shirt. The first 150 participants to complete the full stair climb will receive a commemorative medallion.

9 AM to 12 PM - Registration begins at 8 AM
Shotwell Stadium (1350 Expo Drive)

This event is open to the public. Refreshments will be provided, and static displays from various fire, EMS, military, and law enforcement agencies will be on-site.

🏅Safety Achievement🏅

In our field, scene safety and defensive driving are two pillars of our mindset. We must utilize safe driving practices to ensure our patients and our crews arrive to their destinations and return home without incident.

We have a new safety accomplishment to celebrate, featuring our Operations Manager Janet!

Presented by Safety Specialist Melissa and Regional Director of Safety and Risk Management Jim, Janet received a safety token for avoiding a collision on the highway. She positively recognized the possible collision when a sports car decided it wanted the lane she was occupying and merged.

Thank you for keeping safety at the forefront of your driving!

Remember, Abilene: check your blind spots, turn down your music just a tad, and yield to the right when units are going emergently. Despite us having large rigs and ear piercing sirens, we still manage to sneak up on people.

🚑Junior EMT🚑

This summer we tried out a new type of program geared towards children and young adolescents to experience the world of emergency medicine.

Our Junior EMT program was the first of its kind for us, and we started with family of current employees for the test run. Our goal is to become more involved with our community and offer unique public education opportunities.

The class was held over several days and across several locations!

🚑 At our main station, the class learned about CPR and simple Stop The Bleed techniques.

🚓 Across the street, the class got to visit the Abilene Police Department and get an introduction into the police department’s roll in the community and on medicals. Communications Manager Lindsey went over when and how to call 911 and reviewed important things to know when calling like your address, birthday, etc. They also got to meet an APD K9!

🐍 At the Abilene Zoo, the class learned about envenomation and what to do if someone is bit.

🏥 A Hendrick Health Trauma Coordinator visited our station and explained what roles and responsibilities Nurses have.

🚁 Air Evac Lifeteam 63 - Abilene, TX flew in with style and explained the air side of emergency medicine and let the class explore the rig.

We’d like to think this class was a success, and we look forward to revisiting programs like this one and hopefully opening them to the public in the future.

📣 Years of Service Milestone 📣

July marked a Years of Service Milestone for multiple employees, including the five team members posted below.

Let’s meet Brandy, Dacy, Zab, Gus, and Brandon!

~Brandy~

Brandy is an EMT Basic who reached her 1 Year of Service milestone and has provided a summary of her journey so far:

For Brandy, serving others isn't just a career, it's a calling. Her journey in EMS began as a rural volunteer firefighter, where she wanted to gain additional skills to better serve her community. That decision led her to enroll in an EMT course, and she quickly discovered a passion for emergency medicine that changed the course of her career. Inspired by the opportunity to make a difference in people's lives, Brandy joined the MetroCare team, where she continues to grow professionally while working toward her Paramedic certification. Before finding her passion for EMS, Brandy spent many years gaining valuable experience in both retail and corrections, striving to bring compassion, resilience, and a strong work ethic to every role she's held. When she's not caring for patients or hitting the books, Brandy enjoys spending time with the people who matter most: her family. She and her husband have recently discovered a love for traveling and camping, taking every opportunity to explore new places and make memories together. Whether she's responding to emergencies as a firefighter, providing compassionate care with MetroCare, or enjoying the great outdoors, Brandy tries to embody dedication, service, and heart, all of which are vital to her character.

~Dacy~

Dacy is an EMT Basic who has reached her 1 Year milestone and wrote a quote to commemorate her first year with MetroCare:

“This past year has taught me so much, and I've enjoyed serving our community and continuing to grow in my career. I'm thankful for the support of my coworkers and look forward to what's ahead.”

~Zab~

Zab is an EMT Basic who reached her 1 Year Milestone and provided the following quote:

“I love to call this job my “first big girl job”, but working here for a year now has been absolutely life changing for me. The people that I get to call my coworkers and friends have become more like family. I have been able to rely on all of these wonderful people to guide and support me through paramedic school while establishing a strong foundation in basic life support. I’ve learned so much already about medicine from my fellow clinicians and how to get through most calls and nights on an upbeat note. I hope to continue spreading good vibes and smiles as well as encouraging others to do their best.”

~Gus~

Gus is a Paramedic on our team who reached 3 Years of Service. He has multiple years of experience both in EMS and in firefighting.

~Brandon~

Brandon is an AEMT who has reached his 10 Years of Service milestone! He received a 10 Year Pin and Certificate for his accomplishment. Brandon has helped out our training program long before he became an FTO this past year. He recently participated in a memorial drive across the country to honor EMS personnel who have died in the line of duty.

We’re thankful for these employees who have served their community and continue to provide excellent patient care.
