Dickinson County, Kansas Dickinson County, Kansas Dickinson County was founded in 1857. It lies along Interstate 70 in the third tier of counties from the northern border of Kansas.

The County has an area of 852 square miles and a population of 19,300.

The Highway, Road & Bridge department will close the 2100 block of 3400 Ave just east of Sage Rd immediately due to a tube failure. The road will be closed until the replacement of the tube is complete.

Dickinson County Commissioners met on August 27 for a work session and regular meeting.

The work session included a discussion on local housing needs and a department update from County Treasurer Leah Hern. During the regular meeting, the Commission unanimously approved the August 20 meeting minutes and county payroll totaling $433,970.39.

Commissioners also shared updates on local business and youth entrepreneurship efforts, the upcoming Kansas Sampler event in Solomon, military affairs breakfast in Junction City, and the Safe Roads for All program.

A reminder for voters: Registration for the November General Election reopens September 1 and closes October 13. The write-in candidate filing deadline is noon on October 12.

The next County Commission work session is Thursday, September 3, at 9:30 a.m., followed by the regular meeting at 11:00 a.m.

Starting Monday 8/24, Vance Brothers will be microsealing the Abilene Bypass. The work area runs west of Vine Street along NW 14th street and continuing on the curve to Van Buren. Work will end just south of the Veterinary Clinic of Symbioun. Traffic will be delayed in this area for Monday through Tuesday, weather pending.

Once work is completed in Abilene, the contractor will move to the 2100 block of Solomon Road just south of Solomon.

After completion of the structure replacement in the 800 block of Key Rd this week, the crew will move to the 1000 block of Key Rd for a structure replacement next week (Monday, 8/24).

The Dickinson County Commission met on August 6, 2026, with several important updates and actions.

β€’ Approval of a proclamation declaring Dickinson County a Purple Heart County, honoring service members who were wounded or killed in combat.
β€’ Awarding the 1060 1900 Avenue bridge project to King Construction for $2,010,953.72, supporting continued investment in county infrastructure.
β€’ Updates on economic development efforts, including continued progress on the EDC strategic plan and a successful business appreciation open house at Sunbelt in Solomon.
β€’ Election updates from the County Clerk’s Office, including a 32.39% voter turnout.

Commissioners also received Kansas Open Meetings Act training during the morning work session and shared positive updates on county operations, local businesses, and agricultural conditions.

The Commissioners are scheduled to meet again on Thursday, August 13, for a 9:30 a.m. work session followed by the regular meeting at 11:00 a.m.
