commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers led by Major General Gordon Granger landed at Galveston, Texas, with news that the Civil War was over and that enslaved people were free.⁣

General Granger issued the following order (General Order No. 3): "The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, “all slaves are free.” This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor.⁣"

General Order No. 3 came two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, which had become official on January 1, 1863, and two months after the surrender of Confederate General Robert E. Lee to General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox, Virginia.⁣

Ducks!!! A pair of ducks ( red-bellied whistling ducks) dropped in to take advantage of what the rain is bringing up! One year a pair hung out for two weeks in the middle of the quad. Just read Make way for Ducklings to a young friend- fun!
