The Aberdeen Township Police Department will be participating today, Tuesday, April 14, 2026, in the Goal: Zero high-visibility traffic safety detail, alongside with law enforcement agencies throughout the State of New Jersey.

This enforcement detail will focus on distracted driving, one of the most preventable causes of serious crashes and fatalities on our roadways. As part of the national Put the Phone Away or Pay campaign and the broader Goal: Zero initiative, officers will be actively targeting drivers who are not fully attentive behind the wheel. The use of handheld devices continues to be a major contributing factor in crashes, often resulting in severe or fatal outcomes.

This detail is dedicated to the memory of Paul Miller Jr., who was tragically killed on July 5, 2010, by a distracted tractor-trailer driver in Pennsylvania. Following his death, his mother, Eileen Miller, became a leading advocate for roadway safety. Her efforts led to the passage of “Paul Miller’s Law,” signed in June 2024, which bans the use of handheld devices while driving in Pennsylvania.

On April 14th and throughout the month of April, law enforcement agencies across New Jersey and Pennsylvania are working together to reduce distracted and dangerous driving behaviors that put everyone at risk.

Put the phone away. Stay focused. Arrive safely.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Reported Threat at Matawan Regional High School Deemed Not Credible

Earlier this afternoon, the administration of Matawan Regional High School reported receiving a threatening phone call to the school’s main office.

Upon receiving the report, the School Resource Officer (SRO), along with school district staff, immediately placed the high school in lockdown. Out of an abundance of caution, lockdown procedures were also implemented at all schools throughout the Matawan-Aberdeen Regional School District.

Officers from the Aberdeen Township Police Department’s Patrol and Detective Divisions responded and initiated a thorough investigation. Officers from surrounding law enforcement agencies assisted by maintaining a presence at each school while lockdown procedures remained in place.

Assistance was provided by the Matawan Borough Police Department and the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office, whose officers helped maintain security at school locations during the incident.

Based on the findings of the investigation, the reported threat was determined not to be credible.

The safety and security of students and staff remain the highest priority. All threats are taken extremely seriously and are investigated without delay. Anyone found responsible for making threats against our schools will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

The Aberdeen Township Police Department will continue to maintain a presence at school buildings to ensure the ongoing safety of students and staff.

We appreciate the community’s patience, vigilance, and cooperation during today’s response.

Anyone with information related to this incident is asked to contact the Aberdeen Township Police Department Detective Division at 732-566-2054 ext. 707.
